CHAPTER 3 — The Man Inside the Coffin Opened His Eyes

The second knock was louder.

Everyone in the funeral hall froze.

A woman screamed.

Two Secret Service agents rushed toward the casket while others threw themselves in front of the President.

"Step back! Nobody move!"

Emily clutched Noah so tightly he could barely breathe.

The little boy pointed at the coffin.

"I told you," he whispered. "Daddy isn't gone."

The funeral director's face turned ghost white.

"That's impossible..."

Another knock.

Then...

A weak voice came from inside.

"Help..."

For three endless seconds, nobody moved.

Finally, a young military officer shouted, "Open it!"

Four agents rushed forward and lifted the heavy lid.

As it slowly creaked open, every phone in the room was raised.

Millions would later watch the footage.

Inside the coffin lay Senator Daniel Hale.

His eyes fluttered open.

His lips were cracked.

A clear oxygen tube was hidden beneath the expensive funeral suit.

He was alive.

Barely.

The room exploded into chaos.

"Call an ambulance!"

"Seal every exit!"

"Nobody leaves this building!"

Doctors rushed forward, pulling Daniel from the coffin.

His pulse was weak, but it was there.

As medics worked desperately to stabilize him, Daniel grabbed the sleeve of the nearest Secret Service agent.

With his final strength, he whispered three words.

"Don't... trust... Richard."

Every eye turned toward Senator Richard Hale.

He had vanished.

His chair was empty.

One of the rear emergency doors swung shut.

"He escaped!" an agent shouted.

The building immediately went into lockdown.

Outside, helicopters circled overhead while armed officers surrounded the estate.

Inside the hall, Emily stared at Daniel through tears.

"You knew..." she whispered.

Daniel managed the faintest nod.

"I knew... they wanted me buried before I could testify."

The President stepped closer.

"Testify about what?"

Daniel looked around the room.

There were senators.

Judges.

Military leaders.

Business tycoons.

People he had trusted for years.

Then he slowly reached beneath the bandages wrapped around his chest.

Everyone tensed.

Instead of a weapon...

He pulled out a tiny waterproof memory card taped against his skin.

"I couldn't hide it anywhere else," he said weakly.

"It contains every name... every payment... every murder they covered up."

The President took the card carefully.

"What organization?"

Daniel looked directly into his eyes.

His answer made every person in the room stop breathing.

"They're not outside this building..."

He slowly pointed across the funeral hall.

"They're standing behind you."

The President turned.

Half the guests had disappeared.

The remaining half slowly began reaching inside their jackets.

Not for phones.

May you like

For guns.
