Chapter 5 - The Grand Finale at the Altar

The morning of October 17th arrived with a clear blue sky. The Vanderbilt Estates looked breathtaking. White roses and rare South American orchids cascaded down the stone pillars. The air smelled of expensive perfume, high-end catering, and impending ruin.

In the bridal suite, Tanya was helping me zip into my white satin dress. Her hands were warm against my back.

"You look stunning, Renee," she whispered, her voice laced with a strange, jittery energy. She thought she was looking at a woman about to walk into a trap.

"Thank you, Tanya," I said softly, turning around to face her. "For everything."

At exactly 4:00 PM, the string quartet began to play the opening notes of the bridal march. The massive oak doors opened.

Sixty of the most influential people in the city turned to look at me. I walked down the aisle alone, refusing my uncle’s arm. I wanted no obstacles. I wanted everyone to see me standing entirely on my own two feet.

Damon stood at the altar, looking sharp in his custom black tuxedo. His smile was wide, victorious. Next to him stood the minister. To my left stood Tanya, holding my secondary bouquet.

As I reached the altar, Damon reached out his hands to take mine. His fingers were slightly damp.

"We are gathered here today," the minister began, his deep voice echoing through the vaulted stone chapel, "to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony."

The ceremony proceeded flawlessly. The vows were exchanged. The rings were brought forward. Damon looked at me, reciting his promises of loyalty, fidelity, and eternal devotion with a straight face that would have won an Academy Award.

"If anyone here knows any reason why these two should not be wed," the minister announced to the crowd, "let them speak now, or forever hold their peace."

The traditional silence fell over the room.

I took a step backward, releasing Damon’s hands.

"Actually," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the microphone clipped to my bodice. "I do."

A collective gasp rippled through the pews. Damon’s smile froze. "Renee? What are you doing? Is this a joke?"

"I don't do jokes, Damon. I do logistics," I said smoothly.

I raised my left hand, gesturing toward the massive projection screen that had been set up behind the altar—the one that was supposed to display a romantic montage of our childhood photos during the reception.

The screen flickered to life.

It didn't show childhood photos.

It showed the high-definition security footage from the engagement party hallway. The crowd watched in stunned, breathless horror as Tanya wrapped her fingers around Damon’s wrist. They watched them enter the private room. They watched Damon’s hand grip her jaw. They watched the long, passionate, practiced kiss.

"Renee! Turn that off!" Damon hissed, lunging toward the audio-visual booth. But the tech crew wasn't his. They were my employees, and they had strict orders.

The video transitioned.

Next came the screenshots of the forty-three emails. “She’s working Saturday. I’ll be home by noon.” The crowd began to murmur loudly. Tanya’s mother let out a sharp, choked sob from the front pew.

But I wasn't finished.

"Many of you know Damon as a financial consultant," I said, turning to face Table One, where Arthur Sterling sat, his face turning an angry, mottled purple. "But he’s also an exceptional thief. Over the last six months, Damon Whitaker and my maid of honor, Tanya Briggs, have systematically embezzled $137,600 from my personal accounts into an offshore LLC called T&D Holdings to purchase a luxury townhouse."

The screen displayed the bank statements, the wire transfers, and finally, the property deed listing Tanya Briggs as the sole owner, funded entirely by T&D Holdings.

Tanya’s face was entirely bloodless. She looked at her parents, who were already standing up, horrified, staring at her like she was a monster.

Damon turned on me, his eyes wild, his polished corporate veneer completely shattered. "You crazy bitch! You think you can ruin me? You signed the prenup! You have nothing! You can't touch my assets!"

The Hook: I let out a low, musical laugh that echoed through the chapel. "Oh, Damon. I didn't sign your final prenup. But I did sign the vendor contracts. Every single dollar of the $200,000 corporate loan you took out last month was paid directly to my company as non-refundable service fees. You don't have an empire. You have a mountain of debt, a ruined reputation, and an investigation pending."

Right on cue, two sharply dressed men in dark suits stepped out from the back of the chapel. Marcus Vance had done his job well; the local police financial crimes division had been handed a complete, pre-packaged dossier of corporate fraud and grand larceny that morning.
