Chapter 6 - A Beautifully Planned Ruin

The aftermath of a perfectly executed event is always quiet.

As the police escorted Damon and a weeping, hysterical Tanya out through the side doors of the venue, the guests sat in absolute, stunned silence. The local lifestyle influencers were typing furiously on their phones. The headlines were already going live before the catering staff could even clear the untouched champagne.

“Raleigh’s Top Event Planner Exposes Fiancé’s Multi-Million Dollar Fraud and Affair at the Altar!”

Arthur Sterling stood up from Table One, walked straight up to me, and shook my hand. "Ms. Caldwell, your ex-fiancé is a scoundrel. But your attention to detail and tactical execution are the most impressive things I’ve seen in business in twenty years. My company is hosting an international corporate summit next month. I want Caldwell Events to manage the entire budget."

"It would be my absolute pleasure, Mr. Sterling," I replied, my voice steady, my posture immaculate.

One year later, I stood on the balcony of my brand-new penthouse overlooking downtown Raleigh.

Caldwell Events had tripled in size, securing exclusive contracts with three major Fortune 500 companies thanks to the massive publicity from the "Altar Execution." The phantom vendor funds had been legally absorbed into my business expansion, completely wiping out my initial financial losses and leaving me with a massive financial surplus.

Damon’s consultancy firm had filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy within months after Arthur Sterling and every other major client dropped him overnight. Unable to pay back the $200,000 corporate line of credit, he was currently serving a three-year sentence for grand larceny and financial fraud.

Tanya’s luxury townhouse had been seized by the state to pay off the civil restitution damages ordered by the court. Her reputation in high society was utterly destroyed; she had moved out of the state, broke, unemployable, and abandoned by her deeply embarrassed family.

My phone rang. It was my assistant, reminding me of a site visit for an upcoming international gala in Paris.

I took a final sip of my champagne—the expensive, real stuff, paid for entirely by my own success.

People always think the woman who stays calm during a betrayal is weak. They think tears are the only measure of pain. But they forget that the architect of a beautiful room always knows exactly how to tear down the walls.

I looked at my reflection in the glass balcony doors. My lipstick was perfect. My eyes were clear.

I had built the ending myself. And it was absolutely flawless.
