Chapter 5 - THE MAID’S RECKONING

Headline: "The Secret In The Armory! The Ultimate Betrayal from Within the Shadow!"The mercenary fell with a heavy thud, his shotgun clattering away. Matteo lay on the cold kitchen tiles, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his lower body completely unresponsive. Elena immediately dragged him inside the heavy steel doors of the armory, slamming them shut and locking the electronic deadbolts just as a hail of bullets impacted the outside.
The armory was dark, smelling of gun oil and cold concrete.
As the lights flickered on, Matteo looked up from the floor. Standing in the center of the room, holding a duffel bag stuffed with millions of dollars in diamonds and bearer bonds, was Celeste.
She had used the secret service tunnels to get down here ahead of them.
"You truly are a cockroach, Matteo," Celeste said, her voice hollow, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and desperation. She was holding a silver-plated revolver—the very gun Matteo had given her for protection on their first anniversary. "You should have stayed in that bedroom. You should have let me poison you slowly like I planned."
Matteo managed to prop himself up against a stack of weapon crates, his face a mask of cold fury. "The accident. The sniper bullet that took my legs. It wasn't the Russians, was it?"
Celeste laughed, a high-pitched, unhinged sound. "The Russians? They don't have the balls. It was me, darling. I hired the shooter. But he missed your heart. You were supposed to die cleanly, leaving me the estate. Instead, I had to suffer through three months of playing the grieving fiancée to a corpse."
Elena stepped between Celeste and Matteo, her gun raised. "Drop the weapon, Celeste. It’s over."
"Is it?" Celeste sneered. "Look at him! He’s a broken man! Even if he survives tonight, he’s finished! The commission will never respect a Don who can’t even stand up to greet them!"
"Respect isn't earned with legs, Celeste," Elena said, her voice steady as a rock. "It’s earned with blood. And you haven't spilled enough of it."
Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the armory began to groan. The mercenaries outside were using a thermal lance to melt the hinges. The sparks flew through the cracks like angry fireflies.
"We don't have time for this," Celeste whispered, her eyes darting to the emergency exit tunnel behind her. "Goodbye, Matteo."

She raised the revolver, aiming it directly at Matteo’s chest.
The Cliffhanger: A loud bang echoed, but it didn't come from Celeste’s gun. The thermal lance broke through the door completely, blowing the heavy steel slab inward. The blast knocked everyone to the ground, and through the smoke, a figure walked in—not a Russian mercenary, but a man wearing a high-end tailored suit, stepping over the debris with absolute authority.
