Chapter 5 - THE TRAP IS SPRUNG

Headline: The stage was set. The high-society charity gala was meant to be her public declaration of mental incompetence—but she had a very different presentation prepared.
The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was spectacular. Crystal chandeliers dripped from the gilded ceilings, casting a warm glow over five hundred of the city’s most influential doctors, lawyers, and philanthropists.
I stood in front of the mirror in the ladies' room, smoothing down the emerald silk of my evening gown. I looked healthy. My skin was glowing, my eyes sharp. For the last week, I had faked taking every single cup of tea Eric had prepared for me, pouring them secretly into a collection of glass jars I kept hidden in the garden shed—now fully analyzed and documented by a private lab Marcus had hired.
It was a heavy sedative combined with a chemical compound that induced temporary cognitive confusion.
"Claire?"
The bathroom door opened, and Dr. Evelyn Vance stepped in. She looked stunning in a sleek black gown, her cold eyes scanning me with a mixture of professional assessment and hidden contempt.
"Evelyn," I said, putting on a slightly vacant, shaky smile. "I'm so glad you're here. My head... it's feeling so heavy tonight. I don't know if I can make it through Eric's speech."
Evelyn walked over, placing a cold hand on my arm. "You're doing wonderfully, Claire. Just take a deep breath. Eric is going to announce your generous donation to my psychiatric research clinic tonight. It's a beautiful legacy for you, especially now that your health is... declining."
"Yes," I whispered. "The clinic. Eric said it's the best place for me."
"It is, dear. I'll take personal care of you." Evelyn’s smile was chilling.
I walked out of the restroom and joined Eric at our VIP table near the stage. He looked incredibly handsome in his tuxedo, beaming with pride as he shook hands with local politicians and board members.
"You look beautiful, sweetheart," Eric whispered, leaning down to kiss my cheek. "Are you ready? The board is going to announce the transfer of your trust fund management to my firm in just a few minutes."
"I'm ready, Eric. More than ready."
The master of ceremonies took the stage. "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome our lead financial consultant and board member, Eric Vance, to present this year's landmark endowment!"
The crowd applauded as Eric stood up, straightening his bow tie. He walked up the steps to the podium, looking every bit the savior.
"Thank you, everyone," Eric began, his voice booming warmly through the microphone. "Tonight is a bittersweet night for me. As many of you know, my beautiful wife, Claire, has been facing a private, courageous battle with a rapidly progressive cognitive illness."
A collective murmur of sympathy rippled through the audience. I sat at the table, my face a mask of fragile sadness, while inside, my blood boiled.
"Because of her condition," Eric continued, "Claire has decided to step down from managing her family’s legacy trust. Tonight, we are officially transferring those assets to the Vance Foundation, which will fund a brand-new, state-of-the-art memory care facility led by the brilliant Dr. Evelyn Vance."
The spotlight swung to Evelyn, who stood up and bowed graciously to the crowd.
"And now," Eric said, gesturing to the massive projection screen behind him. "I'd like to share a short video detailing our mission and the future of Claire's legacy."
The lights in the ballroom dimmed.
Eric clicked his remote.

But instead of the promotional video for the clinic, the screen went black.
Then, a grainy, high-definition video feed from a concrete loading dock corridor flickered to life.
