Chapter 6 - THE ULTIMATE PAYBACK

Headline: Her husband stood on stage, ready to claim her multi-million dollar estate. Then the projector screen lit up—and the entire city watched his 19-year marriage crumble in sixty seconds.

The silence in the grand ballroom was sudden and absolute.

On the giant screen, Eric was standing in the shadows of the Riverside Market corridor. The audio, fully amplified through the ballroom’s state-of-the-art sound system, echoed off the high ceilings with devastating clarity.

"I've been slipping it into her tea every night for three months," Eric’s voice boomed from the speakers. "She trusts me blindly. She thinks she's just getting forgetful."

The crowd gasped.

On stage, Eric froze. The color drained from his face, leaving him a sickly, chalky white. He frantically pressed the buttons on his slide remote, but nothing happened.

The video continued to play. The elegant woman in the charcoal trench coat—Evelyn Vance—stepped into the frame.

"By the time the trust fund releases next month, her mind will be completely gone, and the medical conservatorship will be fully in our names," Evelyn’s voice rang out, cold and predatory.

The spotlight that had been shining on Evelyn now caught her frozen in terror. The guests at her table scrambled away from her as if she were radioactive.

I stood up from my table.

The vacant, fragile expression was gone. I stood tall, my shoulders back, looking every bit the strong, unbroken woman I actually was.

"Turn it off! Turn it off!" Eric screamed into the microphone, his voice cracking with panic.

But the screen changed. It showed a slide of their Nevada marriage certificate from fifteen years ago, followed by a copy of the private lab results proving the presence of heavy sedatives in the tea samples, and finally, a bank ledger showing Eric embezzling funds from my family’s estate to fund Evelyn’s private clinic.

The heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

My brother, Marcus, walked in, flanked by four uniformed police officers and two detectives.

"Eric Vance. Evelyn Vance," the lead detective called out, his voice cutting through the stunned silence of the room. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, identity theft, and attempted poisoning."

Eric looked wildly around the room, realizing there was no escape. He looked at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic pleading. "Claire... Claire, honey, please. It's a mistake. It's a setup!"

I walked slowly toward the stage, stopping at the base of the stairs. I looked up at the man I had loved for nineteen years. The man who had tried to erase my mind for a paycheck.

"Ten minutes, Eric," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the silent room. "That's all you asked for at the grocery store. Ten minutes to destroy my life. But it only took me five to rebuild it."

The police officers marched up the stage, grabbing Eric's arms and forcing them behind his back. The heavy metallic click of handcuffs echoing through the microphone was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.

As they dragged Eric and Evelyn out of the ballroom in front of the flashing cameras of the local press, I felt a hand on my shoulder.

I turned around. It was Marcus. And standing right behind him, wearing a neat suit instead of his green store vest, was Frank.

Frank smiled at me, his eyes crinkling with warmth. "You did it, Claire."

"No, Frank," I said, taking his hand and squeezing it tightly. "We did it."

Nineteen years of marriage had ended in a single morning under the fluorescent lights of a grocery store. But as I looked out at the crowd of people who now knew the truth, I realized my life wasn't over.

It was finally, truly, mine.
