Chapter 3 - THE SHADOW IN THE MANSION

The mansion's power grid suddenly failed.
The lights in the study flickered and died, plunging the room into absolute darkness. The heavy electronic security locks on the doors clicked open with a sickening, mechanical hiss.
"Red alert!" Marco shouted, pulling his weapon. "The backup generators aren't kicking in. They've bypassed our main grid!"
Dominic immediately released Elena, drawing his Beretta in one fluid motion. "The girls," he hissed. "Marco, get to the playroom now!"
Gunfire erupted from the ground floor—silenced, rapid bursts of automatic weapon fire. The security guards at the front gate were already dead.
"They're inside," Dominic whispered, his tactical instincts taking over. He grabbed Elena by the arm, dragging her down the dark hallway. "You stay behind me. If you try to run, I’ll put a bullet in you myself."
"I'm not running," Elena whispered back, her voice remarkably calm for someone in the middle of a mafia hit.
They moved stealthily through the shadows, guiding themselves by the pale moonlight filtering through the high windows. The sound of heavy footsteps echoed from the grand staircase. Men in black tactical gear and night-vision goggles were sweeping the house.
As they reached the entrance of the playroom, Dominic saw the door was kicked open.
"No!" Dominic lunged forward, but Elena grabbed his jacket, pulling him back into the shadow of a marble pillar.
"Wait," she whispered. "Look."
Inside the playroom, two heavily armed assassins were holding flashlights, scanning the room. The triplets were huddled together in a custom wooden playhouse in the corner, silent once more, clutching each other in absolute terror.
One of the assassins spotted the playhouse and began walking toward it, raising his rifle. "Found them. The boss said to eliminate the bloodline."
Dominic raised his gun, but before he could fire, Elena moved.
With blinding speed, she slipped past Dominic. She grabbed a heavy, solid-bronze statue of a horse from a nearby side table and hurled it with lethal precision. The statue caught the first assassin squarely in the temple, dropping him instantly to the floor.
Before the second assassin could react, Elena slid across the polished floor, swept his legs out from under him, and wrestled the rifle from his grip. She didn't hesitate. She fired three quiet rounds directly into his chest.
The second assassin slumped against the wall, dead.
Dominic stood in the doorway, his gun lowered, his mind reeling. The way she moved, the way she cleared the room, the ruthless efficiency of her strikes—it wasn't the behavior of a housekeeper.
It was the behavior of a highly trained black-ops operative.
Elena dropped the rifle, her chest heaving, and immediately ran to the playhouse. "Lucia! Valentina! Mia! Come out, it's safe. It's Elena."
The three little girls scrambled out of the wooden structure, throwing themselves into Elena's arms, crying hysterically. Elena held them tight, whispering soothing Spanish words into their hair, completely ignoring the two dead bodies lying only feet away.

Dominic walked into the room, his eyes fixed on Elena. "Who the hell are you?" he asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of awe and terror. "You didn't just wipe your past. You're a ghost."
Elena looked up at him through her messy hair, her eyes hard as steel. "My name is Elena. And I used to be an assassin for the Moretti cartel. And those men? They were sent by your underboss, Marco."
