Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Walls

"You took my keys 'for my safety,' but you forgot that I built the house you sleep in."

While Arturo and Paola were busy checking into their five-star resort in Los Cabos, unaware of the storm brewing in Mexico City, Doña Carmen was undergoing a complete metamorphosis.

The next morning, she stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror in her suite. The worn wool sweater and faded skirt were gone. In their place was a tailored, navy-blue Chanel suit, a silk scarf draping elegantly over her shoulders, and a pair of discreet but priceless pearl earrings. Her silver hair had been styled into a sharp, sophisticated bob.

She looked like a woman who could buy and sell the entire block. And in reality, she could.

Her phone buzzed. It was Licenciado Mendoza.

"Doña Carmen, I have the results of the audit," the lawyer said, his tone grim. "I'm afraid the situation is worse than we thought. Your son has been using your late husband's name to secure massive secondary loans. He didn't just borrow money; he forged your signature on a quitclaim deed three years ago. Legally, the family home was transferred to his and Paola's names."

Carmen’s breath hitched. "He... he forged my signature? My own son?"

"Yes, Carmen. And that's not all. The luxury lifestyle they flaunt online is a complete facade. Arturo’s logistics business is on the verge of bankruptcy. He took out those loans to fund Paola’s lavish spending and Camila’s private schooling. Currently, they are three months behind on their mortgage payments. The bank is preparing to foreclose on the house."

Carmen gripped the edge of the marble desk, her knuckles turning white. The betrayal cut deeper than she thought possible. Arturo hadn't just abandoned her at the airport; he had actively stolen her legacy, the home she had built with Vicente, just to keep up appearances for his social-climbing wife.

"So, if the bank forecloses, they lose the house anyway," Carmen said, analyzing the board like a grandmaster in a chess match.

"Yes, but the foreclosure process will take six months, and it will ruin their credit forever," Mendoza explained. "However, there is another option. The bank holding the mortgage is Banco Alfa. As it turns out, your trust fund is one of their largest private accounts. If you wish, we can purchase the debt directly from the bank. You would become their primary creditor."

A brilliant, ruthless plan began to form in Carmen’s mind. "Mendoza, buy the debt. Buy the entire mortgage. I want to own the deed to that house by the end of the week."

"And then?"

"And then, we wait for them to come home," Carmen whispered. "But first, I want to make sure their vacation is... unforgettable."

Carmen hung up and looked at her phone. She opened Instagram again. Paola had just posted a video of Arturo renting a luxury yacht in Cabo, boasting about how "hard work pays off."

Carmen dialed the number of the yacht rental company in Cabo, which she easily found online.

"Yacht Rentals Cabo, how can we help you?"

"Yes, I would like to speak to the manager," Carmen said, using her high-society voice. "I am calling on behalf of the Vargas account. My husband, Arturo Vargas, just rented a yacht using a credit card ending in 4092."

"Ah, yes, señora! The luxury catamaran. Is there a problem?"

"Indeed. That card was reported stolen this morning. I am his mother, and I manage the family accounts. If you look at his recent transactions, you will see they are highly fraudulent. I suggest you reclaim the yacht immediately and demand payment in cash—which I assure you, they do not have."

There was a panicked pause on the line. "Oh, goodness! Thank you for informing us, señora. We will dispatch our security to the dock immediately."

Carmen hung up, a cold, satisfied smile playing on her lips. "Enjoy the sunshine, kids. The rain is coming."
