Chapter 4 - The Cabo Catastrophe

"While you were busy posting fake smiles on Instagram, the real owner of your life just hit the 'delete' button."

The sun was shining brightly over the marina in Cabo San Lucas. Paola was posing at the bow of the 60-foot luxury yacht, holding a glass of expensive champagne, while Camila took photos of her from different angles.

"Make sure you get the logo of the yacht in the background, Camila!" Paola barked, adjusting her oversized designer sunglasses. "I want everyone on my feed to see we aren't staying at some cheap public beach."

Arturo stood near the stern, trying to ignore the constant ringing of his work phone. His business partners were calling, desperate for answers about delayed shipments and bounced checks, but Arturo ignored them all. “I’ll worry about it when I get back,” he muttered to himself, taking a deep swig of his beer. “Right now, I deserve this.”

Suddenly, three burly men in security uniforms, accompanied by the marina manager, marched down the dock and boarded the yacht.

"Excuse me! What is the meaning of this?" Paola yelled, offended by their sudden intrusion. "This is a private rental!"

"Mr. Arturo Vargas?" the manager asked, ignoring Paola entirely and focusing on Arturo, who had gone pale.

"Yes? What’s going on?"

"We have received a notification from your financial institution that the credit card used to secure this rental has been flagged for fraud and unauthorized use. Furthermore, we have been informed that your accounts are frozen."

"What?! That's impossible!" Paola screamed, stepping in front of her husband. "Do you know who we are? My husband is a successful business owner! This is a mistake. Arturo, tell them!"

"I... I'm sure there's a misunderstanding," Arturo stammered, his heart hammering against his ribs. He pulled out his wallet and handed the manager a different credit card. "Try this one."

The manager ran it through a mobile terminal. Declined.

"Try this one!" Arturo’s hands began to shake as he handed over another. Declined.

"I’m sorry, sir. You have ten minutes to gather your things and vacate the vessel," the manager said coldly. "If you do not leave, we will call the local authorities and have you arrested for theft of services."

"No! You can't do this to us!" Camila whined, stomping her foot. "All my friends are watching my live stream!"

Within minutes, the proud Vargas family was escorted off the yacht in full view of dozens of wealthy tourists. Paola was red-faced with embarrassment, screaming at Arturo, while Camila cried because she had to carry her own designer beach bag.

Back in their hotel room, the nightmare only escalated. When they tried to order room service, the hotel front desk called to inform them that their incidentals card had also been declined.

"Arturo, what is happening?!" Paola shrieked, pacing the room like a caged animal. "Where is the money? Why are the cards declined?"

"I don't know!" Arturo yelled back, pulling his hair in frustration. "The business... we've been running on a tight margin, Paola! I told you we couldn't afford this trip, but you insisted! You said we had to keep up appearances!"

"Don't you dare blame this on me!" she yelled. "You're the man! You're supposed to provide! Call the bank!"

Arturo spent the next four hours on the phone with his bank, only to receive devastating news: his business accounts had been placed on legal hold due to an ongoing investigation into forged documents and unpaid debts.

"We have to go home," Arturo said, his voice trembling as he hung up. "We have to go back to Mexico City. Now."

"But what about your mother?" Paola sneered, her eyes narrowing. "She's at Chole's house. What if she's back at our place?"

May you like

"She's seventy-two and illiterate when it comes to finance, Paola!" Arturo snapped. "She’s probably sitting on Chole's porch eating tamales. She’s the least of our worries. We need to save our house!"

They booked the cheapest, last-minute commercial flight back to the capital, cramped in the back row next to the bathrooms. The vacation of their dreams had officially turned into a living hell.
