Chapter 2 - The Mask FallsAt 2:00 AM, the front door slammed shut.

Heavy, uneven footsteps echoed down the hallway. Andrew smelled strongly of expensive scotch and cigar smoke. He marched into the kitchen, throwing his coat onto the island, his face flushed with anger.
"Are you insane?!" he barked, coming toward the doorway of my study. "Leaving like that? Leaving my mother standing there holding cold plates while the entire board of investors watched? Do you know what you did to my reputation tonight?"
I didn't flinch. I sat behind my desk, my laptop open, my fingers resting lightly on the keyboard.
"Your mother dumped cold grease and leftover gravy over our five-year-old daughter's dress, Andrew," I said softly, my voice completely stripped of emotion. "And you sat there and toasted to her."
"Itâs a family tradition!" Andrew roared, slamming his fist onto the mahogany desk. "My mother comes from traditional values! In the Vance family, men build the legacy, and women support it! If you had given me a son instead of two useless girls, my mother would treat you like royalty! But you failed, Lauren! You couldn't even give this family an heir!"
Useless girls.
The words hung in the air, toxic and unforgiving.
"I see," I replied slowly. "So Sophia and Chloe are useless to you?"
"In the grand scheme of the Vance legacy? Yes!" Andrew hissed, pulling at his tie. "They can't carry my surname! They will marry off and take someone else's name! They don't secure our lineage! My mother was trying to put you in your place because you act like you're above us. You're just a schoolteacher's daughter who got lucky when I married you!"
He genuinely believed it. He genuinely believed that my humble background meant I had been living off his invisible wealth for the past decade. He had no idea that my fatherâs "humble schoolteacher" background had come with a massive private real estate portfolio that I had quietly built into a multi-million-dollar empire while playing the quiet homemaker.
"Andrew," I said, staring directly into his arrogant eyes. "How did you pay for the Charlottesville estate tonight?"
He froze for a fraction of a second, his swagger faltering before he quickly recovered. "That's business. You wouldn't understand. I secured private financing based on my firm's valuation."
"And the 5.4-million-peso note you signed three months ago with the Manila syndicate?" I continued gently. "The one backed by personal guarantees?"
Andrewâs face went completely pale. The alcohol seemed to drain from his bloodstream in an instant.
"How... how do you know about that?" he stammered, his knuckles turning white. "Who told you about that?"
"I know everything, Andrew," I said, leaning back. "I know you haven't made a single interest payment. I know the note matures on Tuesday at 5:00 PM. And I know your mother pledged her ancestral home to secure your bridge loan."
"Itâs under control!" Andrew yelled, though his voice now carried a sharp edge of panic. "I'm closing a deal with Aethelgard Capital on Monday morning! They are injecting ten million dollars into Vance Global! Once that wire hits, I pay off the foreign note, I clear my mother's home, and I buy that estate permanently! Iâm taking my mother to the signing ceremony as my honored guest!"
"Aethelgard Capital, huh?" I smiled. It was the first time I had smiled all night.
"Yes! The CEO is meeting me personally at 9:00 AM on Monday!" Andrew sneered, trying to regain his dominant stance. "So you better fix your attitude, pack the girls' bags, and prepare to apologize to my mother at Sunday dinner tomorrow. If she doesn't give me her final approval, I will divorce you, Lauren. I swear to God, I will strip you of every cent and leave you with nothing."
"Sunday dinner at your mother's house?" I asked.
"Yes. The entire family will be there. You will walk in, you will apologize on your knees to my mother, and you will teach our daughters how to serve the men of this family. Or you are out."

I closed my laptop with a soft click.
"We will be there, Andrew," I said softly. "I wouldn't miss it for the world."
