Chapter 5 - The Corner OfficeMonday morning arrived with a blinding, frigid sun shining over downtown Washington, D.C.

At 8:45 AM, Andrew arrived at the glass-and-steel skyscraper housing the corporate headquarters of Aethelgard Capital Management. He was wearing a bespoke $4,000 Tom Ford suit, his hair slicked back, carrying an expensive Italian leather briefcase. Beside him walked his legal counsel and his mother, Patricia, who had insisted on coming along to witness her son’s ultimate triumph.

"Look at this building, Andrew," Patricia gloated as they rode the private executive elevator up to the 42nd floor. "This is where real power lives. Once this deal is signed, we will buy that Charlottesville estate outright. And that woman will realize what a massive mistake she made."

"Don't worry, Mom," Andrew grinned, checking his reflection in the mirror walls of the elevator. "Lauren thought she could scare us with that debt note. She doesn't understand high finance. Today, I secure our family legacy forever."

The elevator doors chimed and slid open, revealing a breathtaking, minimalist marble lobby. A sleek glass wall behind the reception desk overlooked the Capitol building.

"Welcome to Aethelgard Capital," the receptionist smiled. "Mr. Vance?"

"Yes, Andrew Vance," he said proudly, puffing out his chest. "I have a 9:00 AM executive signing meeting with the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer."

"Right this way, sir. The CEO is already waiting in the main boardroom."

Andrew turned to Patricia and kissed her cheek. "Wait here, Mom. When I come out, we own the city."

Andrew and his lawyer walked down the long, carpeted hallway, pushing open the heavy frosted-glass doors of the master boardroom.

The room was vast. At the far end of a thirty-foot walnut conference table sat a high-backed executive leather chair, turned toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the city skyline. Sitting at the sides of the table were six senior corporate attorneys, including Marcus Vance, all dressed in dark grey suits with thick black binders open before them.

"Ah, gentlemen," Andrew said smoothly, stepping into the room with an outstretched hand. "I am Andrew Vance. I believe we are here to finalize the ten-million-dollar equity purchase of Vance Global Holdings."

The high-backed leather chair slowly rotated around.

Andrew’s smile instantly froze.

The confidence drained from his eyes, replaced by a sudden, sickening shock that turned his face as gray as ash.

Sitting in the CEO chair, wearing a tailored navy silk suit, a diamond lapel pin, and an expression of absolute, unshakeable authority, was me.
