Chapter 3 - Unholy Alliances

The private airfield on the outskirts of Chicago was bathed in the harsh light of midnight. A private jet glided onto the tarmac, its engines whining as it came to a halt.
Inside a black SUV parked nearby, I sat holding my daughter, my heart hammering against my ribs. Eleanor sat in the front seat, monitoring secure communications. Graham had insisted that we meet here, away from the prying eyes of the press and Arthur Vance’s operatives.
when the jet door opened, Graham descended the stairs. He looked stripped of his usual polished exterior—his jacket was gone, his sleeves rolled up, his dark hair disheveled, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. He walked straight toward our SUV.
When he opened the door, his eyes immediately fell on me, then drifted down to the sleeping toddler in my arms. A raw, painful look crossed his face—a mixture of profound regret and awe.
“Emily,” he murmured, stepping inside and shutting the door behind him. The air inside the vehicle instantly grew thick with unspoken tension.
“You have five minutes to explain yourself, Graham,” I said coldly, pulling my daughter closer to my chest. “Why is Arthur Vance targeting us? What did you do?”
Graham took a deep, shaky breath, running a hand through his hair. “Eighteen months ago, when you told me you were pregnant, my world collapsed. My father was a monster, Emily. You know that. He destroyed my mother, he destroyed our family, and all my life I was told I was just like him. When you told me about the baby, all I could think was that I would end up ruining that child’s life too.”
“So you decided to ruin my life instead?” I snapped, tears stinging my eyes. “You left me alone to face a high-risk triplet pregnancy!”
“I was a coward!” Graham shouted softly, his voice cracking with unbearable guilt. “I thought if I gave you money, if I stayed away, you’d be better off without me! I thought fatherhood was something I was incapable of. But then... then I saw her at the airport. I saw them. Three little humans carrying my blood, looking at me with pure innocence... and I realized I had made the biggest mistake of my entire existence.”
He reached out a hand tentatively, hovering inches away from our daughter’s soft cheeks, but he didn't dare touch her without my permission. Tears welled in his blue-gray eyes—the exact same eyes as my children’s.
“I didn't know Victoria’s father was involved in shady offshore accounts back then,” Graham continued, his tone turning grave. “I entered a business deal with Vance Global to secure my company's future. Victoria and I... our relationship was purely strategic, arranged by our boards. I never loved her. But Arthur Vance used that connection to build a web around me. Now, if I break the merger, he loses billions—and he knows the only leverage he has over me now is you and the kids.”
“What does he want?” I asked, my voice trembling.
“He wants to silence you,” Graham said, looking directly into my eyes with ferocious intensity. “He’s planning to release fabricated evidence accusing you of child neglect, using his connections in the judicial system to start a legal battle that would strip you of custody. He thinks if he creates enough chaos, I will surrender my shares to protect you.”
I felt a cold dread wash over me. A billionaire family with infinite resources could easily destroy a simple woman like me in court.
“What are we going to do?” I asked, feeling smaller than ever.
Graham looked at me, a dangerous, unwavering resolve settling into his face. “We fight back. But to do that, I need you to trust me. Arthur thinks I’m going to surrender. He doesn't know that for the last eighteen months, while I was running away from my personal life, I was secretly gathering evidence on his illegal financial activities.”
“You have proof?” Eleanor asked from the front seat, turning around in surprise.
“I have enough to put Arthur Vance in prison for the rest of his life,” Graham said coldly. “But to expose him without putting Emily and the kids in danger, I need to execute a play he won't see coming.”
“What play?” I asked.
Graham looked at me, his gaze intense and unwavering. “A public declaration. Tomorrow morning, I’m holding a global press conference at Whitaker Towers. I’m going to acknowledge the children as my sole heirs, publicly resign as CEO, and hand over full control of my personal estate to a trust in your name.”
I gasped. “Graham, no! That’s billions of dollars!”
May you like
“I don't care about the money, Emily,” Graham whispered, reaching out and gently taking my hand. This time, I didn't pull away. His hand was warm, but shaking. “I gave up the only thing that ever mattered eighteen months ago. If giving away my empire is what it takes to keep you and our children safe, I’ll burn it all to ash.”
Before I could respond, the SUV suddenly shuddered violently as a dark sedan rammed straight into our side!
