Chapter 6 - The Battle for the Bloodline

The rain poured heavily outside the glass walls of Vance Tower in downtown Chicago. Inside the top-floor auditorium, hundreds of reporters, news cameras, and legal representatives had gathered for Arthur Vance’s emergency press conference.
Arthur Vance, a stern, grey-haired man with eyes like polished flint, stood behind the podium, adjusting his microphone. Beside him sat Victoria, her face cold and unreadable.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the press,” Arthur began, his voice echoing authoritatively through the room. “Today, I bring forward shocking evidence regarding the recent public spectacle surrounding Graham Whitaker. It has come to our attention that the woman claiming to bear his children, Ms. Emily Hart, is part of a fraudulent ring attempting to extort Whitaker Enterprises and Vance Global. For the safety and welfare of these innocent children, Vance Global’s legal team has petitioned the family court for emergency protective custody—”
“That is a lie!”
The heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium slammed open with a deafening bang.
Every camera swung around instantly.
Walking down the center aisle, dressed in a sharp black suit despite the visible bandages peaking through his collar, was Graham Whitaker. And beside him, holding his arm firmly, was me.
Behind us walked Agent Miller and a squad of federal agents.
The room erupted into a frenzy of flashing cameras and shouting reporters. Arthur Vance’s face darkened, his jaw clenching tightly as he gripped the edges of the podium.
“Graham,” Arthur sneered into the microphone. “You should be in a hospital bed. You look unstable.”
Graham didn't stop until he reached the foot of the stage. He stepped up, taking a microphone from a stunned reporter, his voice projecting across the room with terrifying authority.
“Eighteen months ago, Arthur Vance threatened to destroy my life if I didn't comply with his illegal corporate operations,” Graham stated calmly, his voice ringing loud and clear across the live global broadcast. “He used intimidation, corporate espionage, and physical violence to maintain his grip on Vance Global. But today, that ends.”
“This is absurd!” Victoria shouted, standing up from her seat. “Graham, you’re losing your mind!”
“Am I, Victoria?” Graham said, pulling a encrypted flash drive from his pocket and handing it directly to the media production desk behind the stage. “On this drive are ten thousand pages of financial records detailing Vance Global’s illegal offshore accounts, human trafficking logistics, and tax evasion schemes. Along with audio recordings of Arthur Vance ordering the assault on my vehicle last night.”
Gasps echoed through the crowd. On the massive LED screens behind the podium, files, bank statements, and wiretap transcripts began flashing rapidly for the entire world to see.
Arthur Vance turned deathly pale. “Cut the feed! Turn off the screens!” he screamed to his staff, but no one moved.
Agent Miller stepped onto the stage, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. “Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for federal conspiracy, money laundering, extortion, and attempted assault. You have the right to remain silent.”
Victoria burst into tears, sinking into her chair as federal officers handcuffed her father right in front of fifty national news cameras. Arthur stared at Graham with pure, venomous hatred as he was led away in chains.
“You destroyed everything, Whitaker!” Arthur spat as he passed him. “You gave up an empire for that woman and her bastards!”

Graham looked at Arthur, his face calm, filled with a peaceful certainty he hadn't possessed in years.
“They aren't bastards, Arthur,” Graham said quietly, stepping back to stand beside me, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me close to his side. “They are my family. And they are worth more than everything you ever owned.”
