Chapter 4 - The Ambush at the Docks

Glass shattered, screeching metal echoed through the night, and my daughter instantly woke up, screaming in terror.

“Get down!” Graham roared, throwing his body over mine and shielding our daughter with his back as another dark vehicle pulled up, blocking the front of our SUV.

“Eleanor, drive!” Graham screamed.

“The engine is dead!” Eleanor yelled back, frantically trying to turn the key as smoke began pouring from under the hood.

Out side, four heavily armed men in dark clothes stepped out of the sedans. One of them drew a heavy iron crowbar and smashed the driver’s side window, dragging Eleanor’s security guard out into the street.

“Emily, listen to me,” Graham said, his voice terrifyingly calm despite the chaos. He unclipped his watch—a priceless heirloom—and slipped it onto my wrist, pressing a small button on the side. “This has a GPS tracker linked directly to federal authorities. The moment things go sideways, they will track this signal.”

“Graham, what are you doing? Don't go out there!” I cried, grabbing his jacket.

He looked at me, and for the first time in eighteen months, I saw the fierce, unyielding love he used to look at me with in that tiny Cambridge apartment. He leaned in and kissed my forehead gently.

“I let you down once, Emily,” he whispered. “I will never let you down again.”

He kicked open the SUV door and stepped out into the night, shutting the door behind him and locking it from the outside.

Through the cracked, tinted windows, I watched in utter horror as Graham faced the four men.

“Vance sent you, didn't he?” Graham spat, stepping toward the lead attacker. “Tell Arthur that if he touches a single hair on my family's head, I won't just ruin him financially—I’ll tear his life apart piece by piece.”

The lead attacker laughed, a cold, metallic sound. “Mr. Vance doesn't want you dead, Whitaker. He just wants you to sign the merger papers and hand over the key to your offshore servers. Where are the files?”

“You’re going to have to kill me to get them,” Graham growled.

The man raised a iron bar, swinging it directly at Graham. Graham ducked, lunging forward with a brutal punch that caught the man square in the jaw, sending him stumbling back. But the other three men rushed him at once. Graham fought like a man possessed, driven by pure primal instinct to protect his family. He took down another attacker, but a heavy blow to his shoulder brought him to one knee.

Inside the SUV, my heart was tearing apart. Tears streamed down my face as I watched the man I thought was a cold, heartless coward sacrifice his own body to buy us time.

Suddenly, sirens blared in the distance—red and blue lights flashing against the night sky. The tracker on Graham’s watch had worked. Federal agents and local police cruisers tore into the airfield, tires screeching as armed officers flooded the area.

“Police! Drop your weapons!”

The attackers panicked, scattering toward their vehicles, but the police quickly surrounded and tackled them to the ground.

Graham collapsed onto his side, clutching his bleeding ribs, gasping for air.

I unbuckled my seatbelt, forced the damaged SUV door open, and ran to him, carrying our daughter in my arms. I dropped to my knees in the dirt beside him, my tears spilling onto his bloody shirt.

“Graham! Graham, look at me!” I sobbed.

He forced his eyes open, looking up at me through the blood dripping from a cut on his forehead. A faint, broken smile touched his lips.

“Are... are you okay?” he choked out. “Is the baby safe?”

May you like

“We’re safe,” I wept, pressing my hand against his cheek. “We’re safe because of you.”

He reached up with a weak, trembling hand, his thumb gently wiping away my tears. “I’m sorry, Emily,” he whispered before his eyes rolled back, and he lost consciousness.
