Chapter 2 - THE GILDED CAGE REOPENS

The transition was swift, brutal, and entirely non-negotiable. By nightfall, Serena and the triplets were sitting in the back of a luxury, bulletproof SUV, speeding toward the coast of Rhode Island.

Ava had fallen asleep against Serena’s shoulder, her thumb tucked into her mouth, while Luca watched the wipers swipe rhythmically against the windshield. But Marco remained wide awake, sitting perfectly straight, his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror where Rocco’s eyes met his in a silent, tense standoff.

"Where are we going, Mommy?" Luca asked groosily, rubbing his sticky cheek against her sleeve.

"To a... a big house by the ocean, sweetie," Serena said, her voice cracking. She looked out the window as the massive iron gates of the Duca coastal estate swung open.

Five years ago, she had escaped this very estate through a blind spot in the security cameras that she had spent months charting. Returning felt like walking backward into a trap that had already snapped shut once before.

The SUV pulled up to the grand limestone mansion. The front doors were already thrown open, a line of uniformed staff standing at attention. News traveled fast in the underworld; the Don had found his wife, and she had returned with three heirs.

Rocco stepped out of the front seat, opened Serena's door, and reached in. He didn't wait for her permission. He gently scooped Ava into his arms. The little girl stirred, murmuring in her sleep, her small hands instinctively clutching the lapel of Rocco’s expensive wool coat.

A visceral, primitive wave of protectiveness washed over Rocco. He looked down at the child—his daughter—and felt a terrifying vow cement itself in his soul. Anyone who tries to take them from me will burn.

"Dante, carry Luca," Rocco ordered.

"I can walk," Marco said firmly, stepping out of the vehicle on his own. He looked up at the towering mansion, then at Rocco. "Is this your castle?"

"It’s yours too, Marco," Rocco replied, his voice devoid of its usual icy edge.

Serena stepped out, her legs trembling. She followed Rocco inside, the opulence of the grand foyer hitting her like a physical blow. Nothing had changed. The marble floors were still polished to a mirror shine, the crystal chandeliers still cast fractured light across the walls. But as she looked closer, she noticed something different.

The grand portrait of Rocco’s tyrannical father, which used to dominate the main hallway, was gone. In its place was a blank wall.

"I had it burned the night he died," Rocco said, noticing her gaze. He handed Ava over to a trusted nanny who stood waiting with a warm blanket. "Take them upstairs to the east wing. It has been prepared for them."

"Mommy!" Luca whimpered, realizing he was being separated from her.

"It's okay, Luca," Serena forced a smile, kneeling down to kiss his forehead. "Go with the nice lady. Mommy will be right upstairs in a minute."

Once the children were ushered down the long hallway, the heavy silence of the mansion descended upon them. Rocco turned to Serena, the mask of the doting father slipping away, replaced by the dangerous, unyielding mafia don.

"We need to talk," he said, turning into his private study.

Serena followed him, slamming the heavy mahogany door behind her. "You kidnapped us! You can't just drag us across state lines, Rocco! I have a life in Boston. I have a job at the bakery, the kids have preschool—"

"Your life in Boston was a lie," Rocco interrupted, walking behind his desk. He threw a thick manila folder onto the surface. "Your name wasn't Serena Vale. It was a forged identity provided by a rogue faction of the Russian syndicate. Did you really think I wouldn't find out?"

Serena’s breath hitched. Her blood ran cold. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Five years ago, you didn't just run away because you were scared of my father," Rocco said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as he walked around the desk, cornering her. "You ran because someone helped you. Someone who wanted to use my unborn children as leverage against me. Who gave you the forged passport, Serena? Who gave you the apartment in Boston?"

Serena backed away until her spine hit the door. She looked at the folder on the desk. She had thought her escape was a miracle, a stroke of luck. But looking into Rocco's unforgiving eyes, she realized she had been a pawn in a game much larger and deadlier than she had ever imagined.

"I... I don't know," she whispered honestly, terror paralyzing her. "A man contacted me. He said he knew a way out. He said he wanted to save my babies from the Ducas. I never asked his name..."

Before Rocco could answer, the glass window behind his desk suddenly shattered into a million pieces. A high-caliber sniper round tore through the leather chair where Rocco had been standing just seconds prior.
