Chapter 3 - SMOKE AND BLOODLINES

"Down!" Rocco roared.

In a fraction of a second, he lunged across the room, tackling Serena to the floor just as a second bullet embedded itself into the mahogany paneling above their heads. The alarms of the estate began to blare—a deafening, rhythmic wail that signaled an alpha-level security breach.

Rocco pinned Serena beneath his body, shielding her entirely as plaster and glass rained down upon them.

"Dante!" Rocco bellowed into the comm-link on his wrist. "Status!"

"We are under fire, Boss! Heavy infantry breaching the northern perimeter! They knew the security rotation!" Dante’s voice crackled through the static, punctuated by the unmistakable rattle of automatic gunfire outside.

"The children," Serena screamed, her fingers digging into Rocco's shoulders, her face twisted in pure agony. "Rocco, the children!"

"I have them. I swear to God, Serena, I have them," Rocco said, his pale blue eyes blazing with a terrifying, lethal light. He pulled a compact Walther PPK from his ankle holster and pressed it into her hand. "Stay low. If anyone opens this door and it isn't me or Dante, you empty the magazine. Do you understand me?"

Serena nodded, her whole body shaking as she gripped the heavy metal weapon.

Rocco stood up, staying clear of the shattered window line, and drew a modified semi-automatic rifle from a hidden compartment beneath his desk. He racked the bolt with a sickeningly smooth clack. The cold, unfeeling monster he had cultivated for five years was fully awake now, and it was hungry.

He slipped out of the study, leaving Serena in the dark.

Upstairs in the east wing, the nanny was screaming. Rocco took the stairs three at a time, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm. He fired three precise shots down the hallway, dropping a masked mercenary who had just breached the upper balcony. The man crumpled to the floor, blood pooling on the cream-colored carpet.

Rocco kicked the door to the children’s suite open.

Ava was crying under the bed, her hands over her ears. Luca was curled into a ball next to her, sobbing. But Marco was standing near the closet, holding a heavy brass lamp, his knuckles white, his young face pale but rigid with defiance.

When Marco saw Rocco, his small shoulders sagged slightly. "They have guns," the boy whispered.

"I have bigger ones," Rocco said, stepping into the room and scanning the perimeter. He knelt down, pulling Ava and Luca out from under the bed, gathering all three of them into his massive arms. For a split second, he just held them, feeling their tiny hearts beating frantically against his chest. "Listen to me. You are Ducas. You do not hide. You do not cry. You stay with me, and I will walk you through the fire. Understand?"

Marco nodded slowly. Luca wiped his nose, nodding too.

Rocco carried Ava on his hip, guiding the boys closely beside him as they retreated down the reinforced service staircase toward the basement bunker.

Downstairs, the battle was winding down. Dante and the elite guard had neutralized the extraction team. Five mercenaries lay dead in the grand foyer, their black tactical gear stained crimson.

Serena ran down the stairs, her face pale, the gun still clutched in her hand. When she saw the children safe, she dropped the weapon and fell to her knees, pulling them into a fierce embrace.

Rocco walked over to one of the dead mercenaries. He knelt down, ripping the balaclava off the corpse's face. The man was young, European, with a distinct tattoo of a crowned viper on his neck.

Dante stepped up beside Rocco, his face grim. "Bratva. The Volkov faction. But Boss... how did they know she was here? How did they track her so fast?"

Rocco stood up, his eyes turning into chips of ice as he looked at the dead man, then at Serena, who was holding their children tight.

"They didn't track her here, Dante," Rocco said, his voice deadly quiet. "They followed us from the diner. The Volkovs didn't want to kill her five years ago. They were keeping her hidden in Boston as a breeding mare, waiting for the children to grow old enough to be integrated into their own bloodline. And someone in my own inner circle gave them the green light to strike tonight."
