Chapter 4 - THE SIEGE OF BROOKLINERed emergency lights painted the sterile corridors in the color of fresh blood. The sharp, mechanical screech of iron security doors slamming down echoed through the underground complex as the automatic lockdown protocol engaged.

Matteo didn't hesitate. He drew two customized 9mm handguns from his shoulder holsters.
"Sarah, stay down!" he barked over his shoulder as he racked the slides of both weapons.
"Bring my daughter back!" Sarah screamed through her tears, clutching her wounded abdomen. "If you ever loved me, Michael, don't let them take her!"
Matteo didn't answer. He didn't need to. He slammed the heavy steel door of Sarah’s room, locking it from the outside with an electronic keycard that only he possessed, and bolted down the red-lit hallway toward Emma’s suite.
Gunfire exploded at the end of the hall.
Four of Matteo’s elite guards were locked in a fierce shootout with six heavily armed mercenaries wearing night-vision goggles and tactical body armor. The sound of automatic weapons fire was deafening in the enclosed concrete space. Plaster chips rained down like snow, and the air instantly filled with the acrid stench of burning powder.
"Protect the East Wing!" Vincent’s voice screamed over the comms system above the roar of combat. "Suppressing fire! Don't let them reach the medical bays!"
Matteo moved like a phantom through the chaos. He didn't take cover; he created it. Slid across the slick tile floor, he fired four rounds upward, taking down two Russian mercenaries positioned on the overhead duct ventilation racks. He popped up, grabbed a third enemy soldier around the neck, pulled him into his line of fire as a shield against incoming bullets, and executed two clean headshots on the remaining attackers.
In less than fifteen seconds, the hallway was clear of immediate threats. But Matteo’s heart sank when he reached the door of Emma’s room.
The steel door had been blown inward by a localized breach charge. The lock was destroyed.
"Emma!" Matteo roared, throwing the door open.
The room was empty.
The cashmere blanket lay tossed on the floor. The stuffed bear was crushed beneath a heavy tactical boot print. The high-altitude window leading to the facility’s subterranean drainage escape route had been cut through with an industrial thermal torch.
Matteo sprinted to the window, peering into the dark, echoing concrete tunnel beneath the estate.
Down the shaft, fifty yards away, a tall figure in a grey tactical coat was carrying a small, thrashing bundle wrapped in a black Kevlar bag. Emma’s muffled screams rang through the pipe.
"Matt! Help me! Matt!"
Seeing his child being dragged into the dark broke something fundamental inside Matteo Reichi. The cold, calculating mob boss died in that instant. What remained was a father possessed by absolute, unadulterated fury.
Matteo vaulted through the broken window frame, dropping ten feet into the drainage tunnel, landing in a crouching roll. He didn't care about tactical cover. He didn't care about his own safety. He sprinted full speed down the wet, filthy tunnel after the kidnapper.
"Leave her!" Matteo shouted, his voice echoing like thunder through the concrete veins of the city.
The kidnapper stopped, turning around slowly. In the dim red glow of the tunnel’s emergency lights, Matteo recognized the man’s scarred, sunken face.
It was Viktor "The Hound" Sokolov—Nikolai’s younger brother and the lead executor of the Sokolov family’s black-ops division.
Viktor held a compact submachine gun in his right hand, pointing it directly at the duffel bag slung over his shoulder.
"One step closer, Reichi, and I put a burst through this bag," Viktor growled, a sadistic smile twisting his scarred lips. "Nikolai said he wanted her alive, but he didn't say she needed all four limbs."
Matteo froze fifty feet away, his guns raised, his chest heaving. "If you hurt her, Viktor, there isn't a corner of this earth where you can hide. I will skin you alive and feed you to your brother."
"Big words for a man whose whole life has been a lie," Viktor sneered. "You thought you were the king of Boston? You were just a seat-warmer for Nikolai’s grand return. This girl isn't just your daughter, Matteo. She’s the legal heiress to the maritime land deeds your mother signed over before she died!"
Matteo’s mind reeled. His mother? Carmen?
Before Matteo could digest the explosive revelation, Viktor pulled a remote detonator from his pocket and pressed the red button.
"Goodbye, Reichi!"
A series of violent explosions ripped through the support beams above the tunnel between them. Tons of rock, dirt, and concrete collapsed into the path, creating an impenetrable wall of rubble that separated Matteo from his daughter.
