Chapter 7 - THE BLOODLINE CONFRONTATIONThe revelation hung in the air, heavy and poisonous, competing only with the howling storm outside the shattered windows.

Nikolai Sokolov was his father?
Matteo felt as if the air had been sucked out of his lungs. The horror of the claim twisted in his gut like a rusted blade. All his life, his hatred for the Russian syndicate had been the fuel that powered his ascension. He had built his entire identity as Matteo Reichi on the ashes of the family Nikolai had destroyed—only to be told he was the offspring of the very monster he sought to eradicate.
"Look at yourself, Michael!" Nikolai laughed, a twisted, maniacal sound that echoed above the creaking of the ship’s hull. "The same cold eyes! The same ruthless tactical mind! You survived the streets because my blood runs in your veins! Your supposed 'father' was a weak fool who died in a drunk driving crash! I took your mother, I owned her, and I created you!"
"Shut up..." Matteo growled, his knuckles turning white around the grip of his rifle.
"Why do you think I let you take over the Boston ports?!" Nikolai stepped closer, holding the dead-man switch high in the air. "I was preparing you! Testing you! I knew one day you would grow strong enough to consolidate the entire East Coast under one throne! And now, with this little girl, our bloodline will rule for another fifty years!"
Behind the mahogany desk, eight-year-old Emma looked between the two men. Tears streaked her dust-stained face, but as she watched Matteo’s shoulders heave under the weight of the monstrous lie, something ancient and fierce awoke inside her.
She looked at the small silver letter opener resting on the edge of the desk—a sharp, heavy antique used by Nikolai earlier to open his mail.
"Matt..." Emma whispered, her voice barely audible over the thunder.
Nikolai didn't notice her. He was intoxicated by his own speech, staring down Matteo with supreme arrogance. "Drop your weapon, my son. Join me. Together, we take down the remaining families. We give this child the kingdom she deserves—"
CLANG!
Emma grabbed the heavy silver letter opener with both hands and drove it with all her small strength directly into Nikolai’s left calf!
"AARGH!" Nikolai shrieked in agony, his leg giving way as he stumbled backward.
In that microsecond of distraction, Nikolai’s thumb slipped off the dead-man switch trigger—but before the digital signal could transmit across the cellular network to Boston, a blinding flash illuminated the night sky.
CRACK!
The panoramic glass window shattered into a million sparkling diamonds.
A heavy .50 caliber armor-piercing sniper round, fired from a military helicopter hovering two miles away in the storm, tore through the cabin air with supersonic speed. The bullet struck Nikolai’s right wrist, cleanly severing his hand at the joint before he could depress the switch.
Nikolai’s hand—still clutching the detonator—fell to the carpet. The device hit the floor, its red light flickering violently before turning solid green.
Signal jammed.
Vincent’s voice boomed through Matteo’s earpiece: "Jamming tower activated, Boss! Signal blocked! The hospital is safe!"
Nikolai collapsed onto his knees, clutching his blood-fountaining wrist, screaming in horrific pain and disbelief. "No! No! You can't... you're my flesh and blood!"
Matteo walked forward slowly, stepping over the shattered glass. He didn't look at the blood. He didn't look at the dying old man’s tears. He knelt down, picked up the severed hand, detached the detonator, and tossed it into the ocean through the broken window.
Then he stood over Nikolai, drawing his sidearm.
"You're wrong, Nikolai," Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly calm, colder than the Atlantic wind whipping through the room. "My father was an honest mechanic who worked sixteen hours a day to put food on our table. He was a man who loved his family."
Matteo leaned down, pressing the cold barrel of his pistol against Nikolai’s forehead.
"You're just a disease I’m finally curing."
BANG.
Silence claimed the bridge, broken only by the sound of rain.
Matteo turned away immediately, ignoring the fallen titan of the Russian underworld. He dropped to his knees in front of Emma, throwing his arms around her small body. She clung to his neck, sobbing hysterically into his blood-stained tactical vest.
"It’s over, Emma," Matteo whispered, his own eyes brimming with rare, hot tears. "I’ve got you. I’ve got you."
"Is Mama okay?" she wept.
"Mama is safe. Everything is going to be okay now."

Matteo lifted her into his arms and walked out onto the rain-swept deck toward the waiting evacuation helicopter. Behind them, the Czar’s Pride began to tilt violently as Vincent’s scuttling charges detonated in the lower engine room, sending Nikolai’s legacy straight to the dark ocean floor.
