Chapter 2 - THE GHOST IN THE MACHINEThe underground bunker beneath Cross Manor was designed to withstand a direct missile strike, yet tonight, it felt like a suffocating cage.

Multiple monitors flickered violently, casting a pale, sickly green glow across Holden’s face as he slammed his fist onto the steel desk. The impact rattled the coffee cups and sent a shockwave through the room.

"Explain it to me again, Marcus," Holden said, his voice dropping into a quiet, lethal register that made the tech specialists shrink back into their chairs. "How does a secure, military-grade network get wiped from the inside while every armed guard is standing at their post?"

Marcus swallowed hard, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. He tapped a frantic sequence into his console, bringing up a fragment of recovered footage.

"It wasn't a standard cyberattack, Boss," Marcus said, his voice shaking slightly. "The firewall didn't get hacked. The encryption key used to unlock the vault... it was a legacy protocol. One we haven't used in over a decade. Only three people ever knew it. You, me, and..." Marcus hesitated, glancing nervously at Holden. "...and Elena."

Holden’s jaw tightened until a muscle ticked violently in his cheek. Elena. Mentioning that name in this room was practically a death sentence, yet here it was, hanging in the air like poison.

"Elena is dead," Holden stated coldly, though his eyes betrayed a sudden, dangerous flicker of doubt. "She went down with the yacht off the coast of Sicily. We watched the wreckage burn for three days."

"Bodies can be misidentified, Mr. Cross," a cool, sharp voice echoed from the doorway.

Dr. Silas Vance stepped into the bunker. Vance was Holden’s chief strategist and personal physician—a brilliant, cynical man who usually treated the underworld's chaotic violence like a clinical science experiment. Tonight, however, even Vance looked unsettled. He held a small, charred metallic chip in a pair of tweezers.

"What is that?" Holden asked, turning sharply toward him.

"I pulled this out of the collar Phantom wears," Vance said, walking over to the desk and dropping the chip onto the metal surface. It was a micro-transponder, scorched around the edges. "This wasn't installed by our handlers, Holden. It was retrofitted. Someone has been communicating with that beast right under our noses—and worse, tracking every movement you make on this estate."

Holden stared down at the chip. The pieces of the puzzle were falling into place with terrifying speed. The little girl didn't wander onto the property by accident. She was guided. Every step, every second, had been calculated to deliver a message straight to his heart.

"The girl," Holden muttered, half to himself. "Find out who brought her across the border. Check every traffic camera within fifty miles of the estate."

"We tried," Marcus interjected, his fingers flying across his keyboard to pull up satellite imagery. "Look at this, Boss. The moment Phantom chased after her into the treeline... our thermal drones picked up something impossible."

On the screen, an infrared replay showed Phantom bolting into the dark woods. A second later, the thermal signatures of both the dog and the girl simply vanished. Not faded. Not walked out of range. They flickered out of existence as if they had walked straight through a tear in reality.

"That's thermal spoofing," Vance analyzed, adjusting his glasses. "Or... something far more deliberate. They didn't escape into the woods, Holden. They went down."

Holden’s eyes widened slightly. "The old smuggler tunnels beneath the cliffs."

"Exactly," Vance nodded. "The ones you sealed with concrete after the purge five years ago."

Holden stood up slowly, his tall frame casting a long, intimidating shadow across the bunker floor. He reached into his coat holster, pulling out his custom-engraved Sig Sauer P226 and checking the magazine with a practiced, mechanical click.

"Get the tactical squads ready," Holden commanded, his voice freezing the air in the room. "We're going underground. Tonight, we find out who’s playing ghost games with my life."
