Chapter 1 - THE TOSS OF A PLATINUM PROMISE

Hook: Alex thought he was rescuing his secret lover. He didn't realize he had just signed his own divorce papers—and his career's death warrant—in front of the entire department.
The emergency room at Chicago General was a blur of fluorescent lights and the sharp, sterile smell of antiseptic. Mark, the rookie firefighter, stood in the hallway, his turnout gear still smelling of elevator grease and old dust. His hands were shaking. In his right palm, the simple platinum band felt heavier than a hydraulic rescue tool.
"Mark! Report!" Captain Miller’s voice boomed down the corridor.
Mark looked up, his eyes wide with a mixture of horror and disgust. "Cap... Lieutenant Davis. He... he took the first victim out. Valerie Vance. But Cap, he left his wife inside. She’s twenty-four weeks pregnant. She’s in Trauma Room 3 right now. Doctors are trying to find the fetal heartbeat."
Captain Miller stopped dead in his tracks. His face darkened. "What do you mean he left his wife? Alex didn't know she was in there?"
"He didn't look, Cap," Mark whispered, his voice cracking. "He didn't look at anyone else. He just ran straight for Vance. And before I pulled Mrs. Davis out... she gave me this." Mark opened his hand, revealing Lucy’s wedding ring. "She told me to give it to him. She said she and the baby won't be waiting anymore."
Meanwhile, in the VIP waiting area, Alex Davis was kneeling beside Valerie’s gurney, holding a cup of water to her lips. His radio was buzzing, but he had turned the volume down.
"You're safe now, Val," Alex breathed, his face pale with adrenaline. "I’ve got you. When I got the call for the department store elevator, my heart stopped. I knew you were shopping there today."
Valerie took a fragile sip, her eyes darting around the room. The dramatic tears had dried, replaced by a subtle, smug satisfaction. "You came for me first, Alex. Even with all those other people screaming... you chose me."
The door slammed open. Captain Miller stood there, his chest heaving, with Mark trailing right behind him.
"Lieutenant Davis!" Miller roared. "Outside. Right now."
Alex frowned, standing up and adjusting his uniform. "Cap, Valerie is still in shock. She needs me to—"
"I said outside, Lieutenant!"
Alex stepped into the hallway, his defensive walls immediately going up. "What is the problem, Cap? The rescue was successful. We cleared the elevator."
Mark stepped forward, his jaw tight. He didn't say a word. He just reached out, took Alex’s hand, and dropped Lucy’s platinum ring into his palm.
Alex stared at the ring. The blood drained from his face so fast he looked like a ghost. "Where... where did you get this?"
"Your wife," Mark said, his voice dripping with pure disdain. "Lucy. She was sitting three feet away from the woman you just carried out. She’s pregnant with your child, Alex. And while you were playing the hero for your ex, your wife was suffocating in the dark, tracking everyone's vitals on a notepad because she’s a real first responder. She asked me to give you that. She's done."
Alex felt the world tilt. Lucy? In the elevator?
His mind flashed back to the dark, crowded box. He remembered seeing a pregnant woman slumped in the corner, her head down, her hands over her stomach. He had assumed... he had assumed it was just another stranger. He had been so blinded by Valerie’s frantic texts from earlier in the day, so consumed by the need to protect his "fragile" ex-girlfriend, that he hadn't even looked at the faces of the other victims.
"No," Alex whispered, dropping the ring. It clattered against the linoleum floor. "No, no, no. Lucy!"
He turned and bolted down the hallway toward the trauma bays. But before he could reach the doors of Room 3, two security guards blocked his path. Behind them stood Dr. Sarah Jenkins, Lucy’s OB-GYN and a close personal friend.
"Let me through! That's my wife!" Alex shouted, his voice cracking with sudden, desperate terror.
Dr. Jenkins looked at him with an expression of absolute ice. "You lost the right to call her that the moment you walked past her for another woman, Alex. Right now, your daughter’s heart rate is dangerously low. Lucy’s oxygen levels are critical. If you step one foot inside this room, I will have you arrested for obstructing medical care. Get out of my hospital."

From the shadows of the hallway, Valerie watched Alex collapse to his knees, sobbing. A dark, twisted smile touched her lips. Finally, she thought. He’s all mine.
But Valerie didn't know that Mark was recording the entire confrontation on his body camera—and the rookie had no intention of keeping it a secret.
