Chapter 4 - THE TRIAL OF THE FIRST RESPONDER

Hook: A courtroom bombshell shatters the defense as Lucy takes the stand—not to beg for alimony, but to deliver a piece of evidence that changes everything.

The criminal trial of The State of Illinois vs. Valerie Vance and Tyler Cross became the trial of the decade. Tyler had cracked under police interrogation within two hours of Alex’s assault, turning state's evidence against Valerie in exchange for a lighter sentence. Alex had survived the blow to his head, but the trauma had left him with permanent neurological damage—he would never hold a fire hose again.

Lucy sat in the front row of the courtroom, now thirty-two weeks pregnant. She looked radiant, strong, and entirely detached from the drama unfolding around her. She wasn't there for revenge. She was there for justice for the people in that elevator.

Alex sat on the prosecution's bench as a witness, his head bandaged, looking like a hollow shell of a man. Every time he tried to look at Lucy, she looked right through him, as if he were made of glass.

Valerie’s defense attorney stood up, trying a desperate angle to sway the jury. "Your Honor, while my client's actions were reckless, she never intended for anyone to be harmed. This was a tragic manifestation of a mental health crisis born out of unrequited love. Furthermore, the prosecution has no definitive proof that my client knew the specific dangers of the elevator shutdown."

The prosecutor smiled grimly. "The state calls Lucy Miller to the stand."

A murmur went through the courtroom as Lucy walked up, her steps steady, placing her hand on the Bible and swearing the oath.

"Ms. Miller," the prosecutor said. "During the seven hours you were trapped in that elevator, you took notes. Can you read the final entry you made before the doors were opened?"

Lucy pulled out the small, wrinkled notepad from her purse. The pages were stained with sweat and grease.

"I wrote: 19:42. Oxygen levels declining rapidly. Patient Valerie Vance has ceased her panicked screaming. She is whispering to delivery driver Tyler Cross. I heard her say: 'Make sure the media gets the footage from the lobby. Alex needs to look like a god when he carries me out.'"

The courtroom exploded into chaos.

Valerie screamed from the defense table, "She’s lying! She’s a bitter ex-wife trying to ruin me!"

"Order! Order in the court!" the judge slammed his gavel down.

"I am an ER nurse," Lucy said, her voice clear, echoing through the microphone. "I am trained to document reality under pressure. Valerie Vance wasn't suffering a mental health crisis. She was directing a movie. A movie that almost cost my daughter her life."

Alex buried his face in his hands, weeping openly. He had sacrificed his marriage, his child, his reputation, and his career for a woman who had literally engineered his downfall.

As Lucy stepped down from the stand, she passed Alex. He reached out a trembling hand, catching the edge of her sleeve. "Lucy... please. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry."

Lucy gently pulled her sleeve away from his grip. "Save your breath, Alex. You're going to need it for what comes next."
