Chapter 1: The Sound of the Void

The darkness was heavy, thick enough to suffocate. Inside the cabin, the sudden silence left by the extinguished lantern was more terrifying than the monster they had just pulled from Arthur’s ear.
"Arthur?" Clara choked out, her fingers cramping around the tweezers. She could feel the creature pulsing against the metal, a rhythmic, sickening heartbeat.
No answer.
She fumbled in the dark, her boots scraping against the floorboards until her hand found the box of matches. Strike. The flare of sulfur illuminated the room for a split second before she touched it to the lantern wick.
The light flooded back. Arthur was still sitting in the chair. But he wasn’t shaking anymore. He sat perfectly rigid, his head tilted slightly to the left, as if listening to something far away. A thin trickle of black, oily fluid was leaking from his ear canal, staining his collar.
"Arthur, look at me," Clara begged, her voice cracking.
Slowly, his neck cranked toward her. His eyes, usually a warm hazel, were blown out—the pupils dilated so wide that the irises were practically gone.
"It’s beautiful, Clara," he whispered. His voice lacked any human cadence; it was flat, perfectly level. "The storm didn't stop. It just... went inside."
Before she could process his words, a violent thud shook the cabin door.
Clara whipped her head around. The tweezers slipped from her numb fingers. The black, twisting creature hit the floorboards with a soft, wet slap. The moment it touched the wood, it didn't crawl—it melted into the seams of the floor, vanishing instantly.
THUD. THUD. THUD.

Something was throwing its weight against the heavy oak door from the outside. But there was no wind. No snow. Just the heavy, rhythmic pounding of a dozen hands.
The Hook: Clara backed away from Arthur, her eyes darting to the floor where the creature had disappeared. Suddenly, Arthur smiled. It was a smile too wide for his face, stretching his lips until they bled. "They're here for the rest of it," he said.
