Chapter 4 - THE QUEEN'S REVENGEThe boardroom at Vance-Global Holdings looked less like a corporate office and more like a war room designed by a military strategist. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic, dizzying view of the Manhattan skyline as the morning sun broke through the clouds.

At the head of a massive slate-grey conference table sat Claire Vance.

She wore a tailored obsidian-black pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless bun. No wedding ring adorned her left hand; she had removed it two nights ago and dropped it down the garbage disposal of her new penthouse suite.

The heavy oak doors swung open, and security guards escorted Daniel and his mother, Margaret, into the room.

Margaret looked frantic, her posture rigid, while Daniel looked like a man who had aged ten years in forty-eight hours.

"Claire!" Daniel rushed forward, his hands outstretched, wearing a desperate expression of wounded affection. "What is the meaning of this insanity? A hostile takeover? Are you out of your mind? We can talk about this at home. We can work out the closet situation, we can send Vanessa away—"

Claire didn't even look up from her tablet.

"Marcus," she said calmly. "Play audio file alpha-nine."

Marcus Vance clicked a button on the control console.

Instantly, the crisp, unmistakable audio of Daniel’s voice filled the massive boardroom, echoing off the concrete walls:

"It happened once... We had been drinking... You and I had barely spoken in weeks..."

Margaret gasped, her face flushing crimson with humiliation and rage. "Daniel! Is that you talking to that woman? You recorded your own confession?!"

"Mother, quiet!" Daniel hissed, sweat beading on his forehead. He stared at Claire with horror. "You bugged my office? You recorded private conversations?"

"That wasn't from your office, Daniel," Claire finally looked up, her piercing hazel eyes locking onto his with absolute, glacial detachment. "That was from the smart speaker in our bedroom. The one Vanessa helped you configure. Turns out, enterprise-grade security systems have a wonderful habit of recording everything when you link them to the right master network."

She stood up slowly, smoothing the lapels of her jacket. The sheer aura of command radiating from her made both Daniel and Margaret instinctively take a step back.

"You thought you could humiliate me in my own home," Claire said, her voice echoing softly in the silent room. "You thought that by replacing my clothes, my memories, and my dignity with your mistress, I would quietly cry in a corner guest room."

"Claire, please," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking. "We have ten years of marriage. Ten years of building this empire together!"

"You didn't build this empire, Daniel," Claire corrected coldly. "Your father built it. You inherited it. And within the next forty-eight minutes, thanks to the leverage I acquired using my own generational wealth, Vance-Global is going to foreclose on every single asset you own."

She walked past him, her perfume—a sharp, expensive blend of jasmine and cedar—lingering in the air like a death sentence.

"Enjoy your new office, Daniel," Claire murmured as she passed him. "Oh, and don't worry about Vanessa. She won't be staying in your house much longer either. I've already canceled the foundation's primary funding accounts. She has nowhere left to leech."
