Chapter 5 - THE COLLAPSE OF AN EMPIREBy noon, the financial markets had gone into absolute freefall.

Whitmore Global stock plummeted by forty-two percent within the first twenty minutes of trading after Vance-Global publicly released the comprehensive audit detailing Daniel’s embezzlement of foundation funds to finance Vanessa Monroe’s luxury lifestyle.
The media circus outside the Whitmore Tower was biblical. Dozens of camera crews, reporters, and photographers swarmed the front entrance, shoving microphones into the faces of security guards and desperate junior executives trying to flee the building.
Inside the penthouse suite of the Whitmore estate, the atmosphere was thick with sulfur and despair.
Vanessa Monroe was throwing items into an open Louis Vuitton suitcase with frantic, tearful speed. Her designer clothes—the very ones Margaret had so carefully cataloged just days ago—were strewn haphazardly across the king-sized bed.
"What do you mean, our accounts are frozen?!" Vanessa shrieked into her smartphone, her voice cracking with hysteria. "I don't care about the board members, call my father! Tell him the Whitmore name is finished if he doesn't inject liquid capital right—"
The call disconnected with a sharp, electronic beep.
Vanessa stared at the screen in disbelief. Her father, a mid-level federal judge who had spent decades building a pristine judicial reputation, had already issued a public statement severing all financial and familial ties with her twenty minutes ago, after receiving an anonymous portfolio detailing her corporate blackmail and extortion schemes.
The bedroom door flew open.
Margaret Whitmore stood in the doorway. The matriarch looked older, her usually immaculate hair disheveled, her eyes hollow and burning with bitter fury.
"You," Margaret hissed, pointing a trembling finger at Vanessa. "You arrogant, manipulative little parasite. You brought this house down."
"Me?!" Vanessa whirled around, her face twisted in rage. "This isn't my fault! It’s your idiot son’s fault for getting caught! And it’s your fault for letting him marry a woman you didn't even bother to research!"
"Research?" Margaret laughed hysterically, a harsh, grating sound. "How were we supposed to know that quiet, polite Claire Vance was the sole heir to Vance-Global? She drove a five-year-old Porsche! She volunteered at soup kitchens! She wore off-the-rack dresses to charity galas!"
"She played us," a heavy voice rasped from the doorway.
Daniel stood there. He had ripped off his tie, his shirt collar unbuttoned, his hair completely messy. He looked like a ghost of the billionaire he had been twenty-four hours ago.
"She played us from the very beginning," Daniel whispered, walking slowly into the center of the room where Claire’s cedar keepsake chest still sat on the floor—the exact spot where this entire nightmare had started.
"Where is she?" Vanessa demanded, slamming her suitcase shut. "Where is Claire?"
"She’s already moved her belongings," Daniel said blankly. "Every single piece of art, every antique, every deed to this property that was purchased under her pre-nup clauses... she’s taking it all."
"Pre-nup clauses?" Vanessa froze. "What clauses?"
"The one where if adultery was proven," Daniel closed his eyes, a tear finally cutting a clean path through the stubble on his cheek, "she retains full ownership of the primary estate, all corporate patent rights, and eighty percent of my personal liquid portfolio."
Vanessa went completely pale. She dropped her designer handbag to the floor.

"We have nothing," she whispered.
"No," Daniel corrected, staring at the empty closet where her monogrammed garment bags still hung. "We have nothing."
