Chapter 6 - THE TRUE INHERITANCE OF MÉXICO CITYInside the box were three things.

The first was a thick stack of original parchment deeds, stamped and certified by the Mexican government in 1974, granting absolute, unassailable ownership of the entire Coyoacán development zone—worth over seventy billion pesos—to Don Fernando Mendoza and his direct heirs. Not Jorge Mendoza. Me.

The second was a hand-written letter, addressed to me, dated just three days before my father's suspicious death.

My dearest son Alejandro, If you are reading this, it means my brother Jorge has succeeded in silencing me, and your mother has managed to keep you safe in the shadows. Do not trust the name Mendoza in the halls of corporate power. They are built on blood and theft. This land is your birthright, but more importantly, it is the foundation for the people of this city. Use it to build homes for the poor, the workers, and the struggling mothers like yours who built this country with their bare hands. — Your father, Fernando.

The third item was a microcassette recorder.

Captain Silva retrieved a portable audio player from his tactical gear, inserting the microcassette into the deck and pressing play.

The room fell completely silent. The static hummed for a second, and then a crisp, authoritative voice filled the chamber—the voice of Jorge Mendoza, recorded over twenty-two years ago.

"Sign the transfer over to me, Fernando, or you won't live to see your son start school. The board wants complete control of the Coyoacán tract. You're standing in the way of progress."

And then my father’s voice answered, calm and resolute:

May you like

"This land belongs to the people, Jorge. Not your corporate sharks. Do whatever you want to me, but my son will inherit the truth."

Captain Silva looked at me, his eyes wide with disbelief and respect. "Mr. Ruiz... this audio recording is the smoking gun. It’s an open-and-shut case of premeditated homicide and corporate extortion spanning two decades. Jorge Mendoza is finished."
