Chapter 1

“Your mother came here to help—not to take a vacation. She can sit down after she finishes cooking.”

Valeria heard those words the moment she opened the front door—three hours earlier than expected.

Her flight from Mexico City had landed ahead of schedule in Monterrey.

She had just finalized the biggest contract of her career and wanted to surprise Mateo, her four-year-old son, and her mother, Rosa, who had traveled from Montemorelos to visit them.

Before leaving on her business trip, Valeria had asked her husband, Mauricio, to take good care of Rosa.

The elderly woman suffered from arthritis, her knees were badly swollen, and she had been taking medication for several days.

Mauricio had promised he would treat her like a queen.

Instead...

The living room told a completely different story.

The air conditioner was set to 16°C (61°F).

Her mother-in-law, Doña Ofelia, lounged under a blanket watching television while eating grapes.

Mauricio lay sprawled across the couch, scrolling through his phone with an open beer in one hand and his feet propped up on the coffee table.

Dirty dishes filled the sink.

Laundry was piled everywhere.

Children's toys were scattered across the floor.

Then...

Valeria heard Mateo crying.

She rushed into the kitchen.

The sight before her made her heart sink.

Rosa stood over the stove with little Mateo tied securely to her back in a rebozo.

With one hand she stirred a large pot.

With the other, she leaned against the sink to keep herself from collapsing.

Her face was pale.

Her blouse was soaked with sweat.

Her hands trembled.

The kitchen felt like an oven.

No one had even bothered to turn on the exhaust fan.

“Mom... what are you doing?” Valeria asked, immediately lifting Mateo off her mother's back.

Rosa avoided her daughter's eyes.

“Don't worry, sweetheart. Ofelia wanted the roast ready, the bedsheets washed, and Mauricio's shirt cleaned. I'm almost done.”

From the living room, Doña Ofelia shouted:

“And don't dry out the meat! People from little towns never know how to cook properly.”

Mauricio laughed.

“And wash my gray pants too. I have a meeting tomorrow.”

For seven years, Valeria had paid the mortgage.

The family vacations.

The car.

Even her mother-in-law's dental treatments.

She had endured being called “a lucky country girl” and allowed Mauricio to show off a lifestyle he never could have afforded on his own.

She convinced herself that staying silent was the best way to protect her son.

But seeing the woman who had sold a piece of her own land to pay for Valeria's college education being treated like a servant...

Destroyed the last bit of patience she had left.

Valeria gently wiped the sweat from Rosa's face.

She grabbed a suitcase.

Picked up Mateo.

And said simply:

“We're leaving.”

Doña Ofelia sprang to her feet in outrage.

“Your mother isn't finished yet! And stop being so dramatic. I don't care if you make millions—a wife is supposed to serve her husband.”

Mauricio stepped in front of the door.

“Apologize to my mother... and turn the stove back on.”

Valeria didn't argue.

She calmly took out her phone.

With three commands, she remotely shut down the home's smart electrical panel, turned off the property's water pump, and froze every additional credit card linked to her accounts.

The television screen went black.

The air conditioner died.

Everything fell silent.

“What did you do?!” Mauricio shouted.

“I simply gave you back the life you can actually afford.”

Valeria walked out with her mother and son.

She crossed the street toward the largest residence in the gated community—a magnificent stone mansion Mauricio had admired for years.

She placed her finger on the biometric scanner.

The gates swung open.

Mauricio ran after her barefoot.

“Why do you have access?”

Valeria turned just before the gates closed behind her.

“Because I bought this house three years ago.”

“It's fully paid for.”

“And it's in my name alone.”

Greed appeared on Mauricio's face...

Long before regret ever did.

And he still had no idea...

The mansion was the least of Valeria's secrets.
