Chapter 3 - The Deeper WebTeresa’s eyes darted nervously toward the open door, looking for an exit, but Marcus stepped into the frame, effectively blocking her route.

"Ethan, let’s talk about this privately," my mother stammered, her voice dropping the loud, domineering tone and shifting instantly into a pitiful whine. "I did it for us! For the family! We were falling behind. The rent on my old place was too high..."

"You don't have an old place, Teresa," I interrupted, staring at her with cold eyes. "You got evicted six months ago because you spent all your money on illegal gambling machines at the bodega down the street!"

Kayla gasped. "Wait... what? Mom, you said you sold the house because of mold!"

"Shut up, Kayla!" Teresa snapped, her mask completely slipping now. She turned back to me, venom dripping from her words. "You think you’re so smart, don't you? You think that little pregnant charity case you married is an angel? You have no idea what’s really going on, Ethan!"

"Don't you dare speak her name," I growled.

"She knew!" Teresa shouted, pointing an accusatory, shaking finger at me. "Emily knew about the credit cards weeks ago! She didn't tell you because I paid her off!"

My heart took a sickening dive. "What?"

"Ask her!" Teresa sneered, a triumphant grin spreading across her face. "Ask your precious wife why fifty dollars was transferred from my cash app to her account every single week! She took my hush money, Ethan! She’s just as dirty as the rest of us!"

I stood there, frozen. Marcus looked at me, concerned. "Ethan, do you want us to proceed with an arrest tonight?"

My head was spinning. Could it be true? Had Emily—the woman I was working eighteen hours a day to support—been hiding this from me too? Was I surrounded by snakes on all sides?

"No," I whispered, my voice cracked. "Not tonight. Just get them out of my apartment. All of them. Right now."

"You can't kick us out!" Brittany yelled, finally stepping forward. "It's 1:30 in the morning! Where are we supposed to go?!"

"I don't care if you sleep on the sidewalk," I said. "Marcus, if they aren't off the property in five minutes, press full burglary and trespass charges."

Marcus nodded to his partner. "You heard him. Moving."

The next ten minutes were a blur of screaming, cursing, and chaos. My sisters threw their belongings into trash bags, shouting insults at me, calling me a traitor, a terrible brother, and a pathetic husband who chose a "stranger" over blood.

Teresa stood at the doorway, grabbing her heavy winter coat. Before she walked out, she turned to me, her eyes dark with absolute malice.

"You think you’ve won, Ethan?" she hissed. "You just destroyed this family. And when you find out who Emily really is, don't come crawling back to me crying. Because I won't be there."

They slammed the door behind them, leaving me alone in the silent, wrecked apartment.

I stood in the middle of the mess. Pizza boxes, spilled soda, clothes strewn across the floor. I walked into the bedroom, pulled up my banking app on my computer, and pulled Emily’s transaction logs through our joint checking.

There it was.

Every Friday for the last eight weeks: $50.00 Received from TERESA V.

My stomach churned. The room felt like it was spinning out of control. I couldn't breathe. Was my mother telling the truth? Was my entire marriage built on lies?

I grabbed my coat, locked the apartment, and drove straight back to the hospital. I needed to look Emily in the eye and hear the truth, no matter how much it threatened to destroy me.

When I reached her recovery room, the lights were dimmed. Emily was sitting up in bed, looking small, pale, and exhausted. Her eyes lit up when she saw me, but her smile quickly faded when she saw the devastation written across my face.

"Ethan? What happened? Are you okay?"

May you like

I walked up to the side of her bed, slowly pulling out my phone and displaying the screen showing the transaction history.

"Explain this to me, Emily," I said softly, my voice devoid of emotion. "Why was my mother paying you fifty dollars a week to keep quiet?"
