Chapter 7 - The Mastermind UnraveledBy 4:30 a.m., the rain had stopped over Chicago, leaving the streets black and reflecting the neon lights of police cruisers.

I stood across the street from my apartment building, hidden in the shadows of an alleyway alongside Sam and Detective Marcus Reed. Two unmarked black SUVs and three marked police cars pulled up silently along the curb, their lights doused.

Marcus stepped out of his vehicle, holding a fresh, stamped document signed by an emergency circuit judge.

"We’ve got search warrants for identity theft, grand larceny, wire fraud, and state welfare perjury," Marcus said, checking his sidearm. "Ethan, you stay back here with your brother. Let us handle the entry."

"Make sure you get the lockbox," I said. "And the insurance papers."

"Trust me," Marcus grinned. "They won't know what hit them."

Through the window of my live camera feed on my phone, I watched the drama unfold inside the apartment.

Teresa was asleep on my couch. Brittany was sound asleep on my bed. Uncle Arthur was sitting at the table, going through my physical mail with a pair of reading glasses.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The heavy pounding on the front door shattered the quiet night.

"CHICAGO POLICE! SEARCH WARRANT! OPEN THE DOOR IMMEDIATELY!"

Inside the apartment, total chaos erupts on my screen. Uncle Arthur jumped out of his seat, knocking over his champagne glass. Teresa screamed, throwing off her blanket. Brittany ran out of the bedroom in her pajamas, shrieked in terror.

"Destroy the papers!" Arthur yelled frantically, grabbing the insurance forms and trying to shove them into the kitchen trash can.

CRASH!

The door flew open as officers breached the apartment, firearms drawn, tactical flashlights cutting through the dim room.

"DOWN ON THE GROUND! ALL OF YOU! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!"

"What is the meaning of this?!" Uncle Arthur screamed, holding his hands up while backing against the wall. "I am an attorney-at-law! You are violating my clients' rights! We have a court order!"

Marcus stepped into the frame, pulling out the signed warrant. "Your court order was obtained through perjury, Mr. Vance. You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny and insurance fraud. Put your hands behind your back."

"You can't do this to me!" Teresa shrieked as an officer forced her arms behind her back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists. "Ethan! ETHAN! I KNOW YOU'RE OUT THERE, YOU LITTLE SNAKE! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO YOUR MOTHER!"

Brittany was crying hysterically as she was cuffed. Kayla was sobbing on the floor, pleading that she didn't know anything about the money.

One by one, they were led out of the apartment building in handcuffs, down the front steps, right past the dark alley where Sam and I were standing.

When Teresa saw me standing in the shadows, her face twisted into a mask of pure demonic fury.

"YOU UNGRATEFUL BRAT!" she screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice echoing down the quiet street as neighbors poked their heads out of windows. "I GAVE YOU LIFE! I CREATED YOU! YOU ARE NOTHING WITHOUT ME!"

I stepped out of the shadows, walking right up to the police cruiser where she was being forced into the back seat. I looked her dead in the eye, feeling no pity, no sadness—only absolute freedom.

"You didn't give me a life, Ma," I said softly, my voice carrying total authority. "You tried to steal mine. But it’s over now."

"You think you’re free?!" she spat, tears of rage smearing her makeup. "You’ll never survive without family! You’ll come crawling back when you need help!"

May you like

"I don't need your help," I replied. "Because my real family is waiting for me at the hospital."

Marcus shut the cruiser door, cutting off her final screams. The sirens flicked on, casting red and blue light across the wet pavement as the convoy drove away into the pre-dawn darkness.
