Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and the Final Twist

Three days later, the national news outlets picked up the story: “Prominent Real Estate Executive and Accomplice Arrested in Massive Multi-Million Dollar Environmental Fraud and Embezzlement Ring.”

The house was quiet again—truly quiet. No fake perfume, no shifted chairs, no whispering voices behind locked doors. The toxic barrels had been hauled away by federal hazmat teams, and the basement was undergoing a complete, deep decontamination.

I stood on the back patio holding a cup of black coffee, watching the morning fog roll gently over Mr. Bell’s abandoned cottage across the orchard.

My phone buzzed on the patio table.

It was an automated security notification from the perimeter cameras. I tapped the screen, expecting to see a stray cat or a deer wandering through the apple trees.

Instead, the live feed showed the front door of Mr. Bell’s cottage swinging slowly open.

A figure stepped out onto the porch, wrapped in a heavy winter coat, carrying a familiar canvas tool bag. But as the figure turned toward the morning light, my breath caught in my throat.

It wasn't eighty-two-year-old Mr. Bell.

It was an entirely different person—a younger man with sharp, familiar eyes, looking directly into the camera lens with a faint, knowing smirk.

A text message popped up on my phone from an unknown, encrypted number:

May you like

“Case closed, Claire. But the locks on your life are only as good as the person holding the master key. See you around.”

I dropped my coffee cup. It shattered against the stone patio, the dark liquid pooling like blood on the ground, while the cold morning wind whispered through the trees, reminding me that some doors should never have been unlocked in the first place.
