“Lorenzo is right about one thing,” I said softly, walking around the mahogany table until I stood directly behind his chair. “A king who shows weakness is a target. But a king who reclaims his blood? He becomes a nightmare.”
I placed a heavy hand on Lorenzo’s shoulder, leaning down so my lips brushed his ear.
“You wanted my empire, Lorenzo? It’s yours.”
Before he could draw a breath, Marcus stepped out of the shadows, sliding a thick, heavy silver chain around Lorenzo’s neck.
“And as for the rest of you,” I said, raising my voice to address the trembling capos around the table, my eyes locking onto the three men who had turned pale as ghosts. “The traitors in New York think they won a war twelve years ago. They’re about to find out what happens when a dragon wakes up hungry.”
I turned toward the grand glass windows, looking out over the glittering expanse of Chicago—my city, my kingdom, forged in blood and reborn in fire.
Elena was resting safely in the penthouse medical suite upstairs, surrounded by the best doctors money could buy, her color returning day by day. Beatrice was by her side, no longer a desperate maid sneaking scraps, but an honored guest in the house of the Vale.
