Chapter 6 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Three weeks later, our backyard was filled with laughter once again—but this time, the guest list was entirely different.

There were no freeloading relatives demanding gourmet meals or mocking my wife. Instead, our closest friends, our reliable neighbors, and Amy's parents sat around the patio tables enjoying a quiet barbecue.

Inside the house, the nursery was filled with bright colors and the sweet sound of baby toys rattling. Frederick was crawling across the hardwood floor, chasing a rolling plastic ball while letting out gleeful giggles.

I stood on the back porch, holding a glass of iced tea, watching Amy laugh as she chased our son across the lawn. The dark circles under her eyes were gone, replaced by the vibrant glow of happiness and security.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was an email from my firm's CEO, congratulating me on successfully securing the Riverdale Suspension Bridge contract. Not only was my professional reputation intact, but the board of directors had unanimously voted to promote me to Chief Structural Director.

"Penny for your thoughts?" Amy asked, walking up behind me and wrapping her arms around my waist, resting her head against my back.

I turned around, wrapping my arms securely around her. "I was just thinking about structural integrity."

She raised an eyebrow, smiling playfully. "Oh? Are we talking about bridges again?"

"No," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "I was thinking about us. Some foundations look strong on the outside, but they're rotten on the inside. Others... well, they go through earthquakes, storms, and heavy pressure, and they only grow stronger."

Amy smiled, her eyes shining with tears of joy. "And our house?"

"Our house," I said, looking out at the sunlit lawn and the happy life we had reclaimed, "is built to last forever."
