CHAPTER 2 – The Secret Hidden Behind the Locked Door

I couldn't breathe.
The figure in the black doctor's coat stepped out of the wardrobe as if he had been waiting there for hours.
My hands trembled so violently that I almost dropped my laptop.
The doctor walked straight toward my sleeping body.
Victor never looked surprised.
Instead, he quietly stood up and said,
"Please... be gentle."
The doctor nodded.
He checked my pulse.
Shined a small light into my eyes.
Measured my breathing.
Then he carefully replaced the IV-sized monitoring patch hidden beneath the sleeve of my pajamas.
That was all.
No violence.
No assault.
No crime.
Just medical examinations.
But why...
Why was this happening in secret?
Then I heard the doctor whisper,
"Her episodes are becoming more frequent."
Victor lowered his head.
"I know."
"If she remembers..."
"I know."
My heart stopped.
Remembers what?
The doctor opened a small medical case.
Inside were dozens of identical white pills.
"They're becoming less effective."
Victor closed his eyes.
"Increase the dosage?"
"No."
Victor answered immediately.
"She has already lost enough."
Lost what?
The doctor sighed.
"You can't keep hiding the truth forever."
Victor looked toward my sleeping face on the screen.
"If she learns everything now..."
"...it will destroy her."
The recording ended.
I stared at the frozen image for nearly an hour.
Nothing made sense.
That evening, I refused to take the pill.
"I want answers."
Victor calmly placed the glass on the table.
"You deserve them."
For the first time since our marriage...
He invited me into a room I had never been allowed to enter.
At the end of a long hallway stood a heavy oak door.
He unlocked it with the same golden key I had seen in the recording.
The room inside was frozen in time.
A little girl's bedroom.
Dust covered the shelves.
Old dolls sat exactly where they had been left.
Family photographs lined every wall.
In every picture...
There was a smiling little girl.
She looked exactly like me.
Not similar.
Exactly.
Same eyes.
Same smile.
Same dimples.
Same birthmark beneath her left ear.
My knees nearly gave out.
"Who is she?"
Victor picked up one faded photograph.
"My daughter."
His voice cracked.
"Eleanor."
I looked again.
It felt as though I were looking into a mirror from another lifetime.
"What happened to her?"
Victor's hands began to shake.
"She disappeared twenty-five years ago."
The room fell silent.
"We searched every state."
"We hired investigators."
"We never stopped looking."
He handed me a small silver necklace.
It was identical to the one my father had given me when I was a child.
Except...
This one had another half attached.
Together...
The two broken pieces formed a complete heart.
My mind went blank.
Victor looked at me with tears in his eyes.
"I believed you were Eleanor."
"But the DNA results came back yesterday."
He paused.
"They proved you are not my daughter."
The words hit harder than any slap.
Then why...
Why had he married me?
Victor finally answered the question that had haunted me since the beginning.
"Because losing you a second time would have broken me completely."
For the first time...
I realized the old man everyone feared wasn't a monster.
He was simply a father who had never stopped grieving.
But one mystery remained.
If I wasn't Eleanor...
Why did I have the same face?
And why did my father always panic whenever Victor's name was mentioned?
That night...
I decided to confront my father.
May you like
I had no idea...
The truth he had hidden for twenty-five years would destroy everything I believed about my family.
