Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Ambush

The glass-walled executive conference room on the fiftieth floor of the Thornton Tower hummed with cold, corporate luxury.

Around the polished mahogany table sat the heavy hitters of the empire: senior board members, legal counsel, and at the head of the table, Jason Thornton, wearing a custom-tailored charcoal suit and a grin carved straight from arrogance. To his right sat Vivian, her arms crossed over her chest like a queen awaiting an execution.

"Well, everyone," Jason announced, tapping a silver pen against the polished wood to call the emergency session to order. "As you all know, my cousin Ethan's tragic condition leaves us with no choice. Under Article 9 of the corporate charter, prolonged incapacitation triggers an automatic transfer of voting proxy to the next of kin—myself."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the room. Several board members who had already been bought off nodded eagerly.

"I move to ratify the emergency restructuring plan," Jason continued, raising his hand for a vote. "And to initiate the liquidation of our European assets to cover—"

"I object."

The heavy double doors of the conference room swung open with a loud, resounding bang.

Every head in the room whipped around.

Standing in the doorway was me, dressed in a sharp, blood-red blazer, my head held high. But it wasn't me that made the color drain entirely from Jason and Vivian’s faces.

It was the man walking steadily beside me, leaning slightly on a cane, but standing tall, his broad shoulders squared, and his icy winter-sea eyes fixed squarely on his cousin.

Ethan Thornton.

Gasps echoed through the room. One board member dropped his pen; another stood up so fast his chair screeched against the marble floor.

Jason went sheet-white, his jaw dropping so low it looked dislocated. "E-Ethan? That's... that's impossible! You're in a coma! You're a vegetable!"

"Am I, Jason?" Ethan’s voice cut through the cavernous room like a jagged blade, cold, resonant, and dripping with absolute authority. He stepped further into the room, his stride steady, every step a hammer blow to Jason's carefully constructed empire. "I suppose it’s convenient for you to believe that while you looted my accounts, bribed my medical staff, and tried to poison me with paralytics."

"Lies!" Vivian shrieked, standing up from her chair, her hands shaking with genuine panic. "He’s delusional! The medical reports prove—"

"The medical reports that your paid nurse falsified?" Ethan interrupted smoothly. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a sleek titanium hard drive, tossing it carelessly onto the center of the mahogany table. It slid across the polished wood and came to a dead stop right in front of Jason’s paralyzed fingers.

"That drive contains every wire transfer you made to offshore accounts, Jason," Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave as he closed the distance between them. "Every dummy corporation you set up, and every recorded phone call where you and Grandmother discussed my planned murder."

Jason stared at the drive as if it were a venomous snake about to strike. Sweat beaded heavily across his forehead, soaking into his immaculate collar.

"Security!" Jason roared, his voice cracking with panic. "Get him out of here! He's unstable!"

Not a single guard moved. The head of corporate security stood by the door, arms folded, staring blankly at Jason. They all knew who really signed the checks.

Ethan stopped right at the head of the table, leaning his hands down on the mahogany surface and looming over his cousin like an apex predator.

"Meeting's adjourned, Jason," Ethan whispered, a lethal smile touching his lips. "And as for your employment here? Consider yourself fired."
