Chapter 7 - Ashes of the Empire

The silence in the boardroom was absolute, heavy enough to suffocate.
Jason stood there, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, his grand corporate coup collapsing around him in real time. Vivian sank back down into her chair, her legendary composure finally shattering into a thousand jagged pieces as she glared at her grandson with pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You can't do this," Jason hissed, his voice trembling as he grabbed the edges of the table. "I'm family! I'm a Thornton!"
"You were a Thornton," Ethan corrected, his voice as cold as deep-space vacuum. "As of three minutes ago, corporate legal has already frozen all your personal assets, revoked your security clearance, and filed criminal charges for attempted corporate espionage, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit murder."
The word murder hung in the air like a guillotine blade.
Two federal officers—quietly summoned by Ethan's private legal team prior to our arrival—stepped out from the corridor behind the glass partition, their badges flashing under the bright LED lights. They walked straight up to Jason, heavy handcuffs dangling from their belts.
"Jason Thornton, you have the right to remain silent..."
The metallic click of the cuffs snapping around Jason’s wrists echoed through the room like a death knell. As they dragged him away, his face twisted in rage, screaming obscenities that were cut off as the heavy boardroom doors sealed shut behind him.
Vivian didn't even look at her grandson as he was hauled away. Her cold, calculating eyes slowly shifted up to meet Ethan's, then flicked over to where I stood by the door.
"You played a dangerous game, boy," Vivian rasped, her voice dripping with venom. "And you brought a stray dog into our house to do your dirty work."
Ethan stepped in front of me, shielding me with his broad shoulders. "She isn't a stray, Grandmother. She's my wife. And unlike you and Jason, she stood by me when I was helpless. Tread very carefully moving forward, or you'll find yourself sharing a cell with your favorite grandson."
Vivian’s face tightened into a mask of pure fury, but for the first time in her life, she had no counter-move left to play. She stood up without another word, leaning heavily on her cane, and walked out of the boardroom, a defeated queen abandoning a lost throne.
As the heavy oak doors closed behind her, the tension in the room finally began to dissipate.
The remaining board members scrambled to stand, offering bowing nods of respect and hasty congratulations to the man they had assumed was dead twenty-four hours ago.
When the room was finally empty, save for the two of us, Ethan let out a long, shuddering breath. The icy predator mask slipped away, replaced by the exhaustion of a man who had literally fought his way back from the grave.
He turned around and looked at me, a soft, genuine smile touching his lips.
"Well, Mrs. Thornton," he said softly, walking over until he stood right in front of me. "It seems our business contract just turned into something entirely different."

I looked up into his stormy winter-sea eyes, feeling the warmth returning to my chest. "And what's that, Mr. Thornton?"
"A lifetime partnership," he whispered, reaching out to gently trace my cheek. "Starting right now."
