CHAPTER 6 — The Mountain Under Siege

Rebecca ordered everyone into the basement.
Federal agents surrounded the cabin within minutes.
Snipers took positions across the ridges.
Helicopters circled overhead.
The countdown continued.
06:41...
06:40...
Emma clutched Ethan's hand.
"They're not coming for us."
"They're coming for the evidence."
Rebecca suddenly understood.
"The hard drives!"
Agents rushed upstairs.
Too late.
Every computer screen flashed white.
The Ghost Circle had launched a remote cyberattack.
Files began deleting themselves one by one.
Panic spread through the command center.
"We're losing everything!"
Ninety percent...
Eighty percent...
Seventy percent...
Then Ethan remembered something Olivia used to say.
"If the truth only exists in one place..."
"...it isn't safe."
He sprinted toward the old fireplace.
Ignoring everyone's confusion, he reached behind the loose stones Olivia had once insisted on rebuilding herself.
His fingers touched cold steel.
A hidden compartment.
Inside rested an old metal lunchbox.
Weathered.
Rusty.
Locked with a tiny brass key taped beneath the lid.
When he opened it...
Rebecca stared in disbelief.
Original photographs.
Handwritten witness statements.
Cassette tapes.
Paper ledgers.
Everything.
Physical copies.
Completely untouched by the cyberattack.
Olivia had predicted digital evidence could disappear.
She had protected the truth with something no hacker could erase.
At that exact moment...
The countdown reached zero.
Nothing exploded.
Instead...
Every television across America interrupted normal programming.
A pre-recorded video appeared.
Olivia.
Alive on screen.
Calm.
Looking directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then I didn't survive."
"I trusted only one person to finish what I started."
She paused.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Ethan..."
"Please protect our girls."
The room fell silent.
Even the seasoned FBI agents couldn't speak.
Outside...
The copper wind chime rang once.
Softly.
As the sun dipped below the mountains.
Emma looked toward the trail and smiled through her tears.
"She kept her promise."
But deep inside the forest...
Far beyond the reach of the FBI...
A lone man watched the cabin through binoculars.
He lowered them slowly.
Then whispered into a satellite phone.
"Phase One has failed."
"Begin Phase Two."
And somewhere beyond the mountains...
May you like
Someone far more powerful answered...
"Bring me Ethan Brooks."
