Chapter 2 - The Ambush at the Doorstep

Facebook Hook Headline: “They thought they could lock me out of my own home while I was fighting overseas. But they forgot one crucial detail about military law!”

The living room cleared out in less than ten minutes. It was amazing how fast a crowd disperses when the air fills with the stench of exposed crimes. Claire’s friends scurried out without saying a word, avoiding my gaze as they fled down the driveway.

Only Claire, Evan, and Diane remained. Claire was sobbing on the sofa, her face buried in her hands. Evan stood by the window, furiously typing on his phone, likely calling a lawyer. Diane was pacing, her eyes darting between me and the TV screen, which was now black.

"Nathan, we need to be rational," Diane said, her voice dropping the aggressive tone and adopting a manipulative, maternal whine. "Claire made a mistake. A horrible, tragic mistake. But she’s carrying a child. You can't just throw her out into the street. Think of what people will say. Think of your career!"

"My career is perfectly safe, Diane," I said, leaning against the kitchen counter, my arms crossed. "In fact, the military takes a very specific interest in things like this. It's called Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Adultery is a criminal offense in the army, and when it involves civilian co-conspirators defrauding military funds, federal investigators get involved."

Evan whirled around, his face flushed red. "You're bluffing. You can't kick us out of this house. Claire’s name is on the lease option, and I’ve been paying half the utilities for the last three months!"

"You've been paying the utilities using the joint checking account Claire transferred my combat pay into," I corrected him, holding up a printout of the bank statements Major Ruiz had pulled for me. "Every dollar you spent on this house, on that baby shower, and on that watch on your wrist came from my deployment earnings. You didn't pay for anything, Evan. You stole it."

Claire lifted her head, her eyes red and swollen. "Nathan... please. I was scared. When you left for this second tour, I felt like I didn't have a husband anymore. Evan was just there. He listened to me. It just happened."

"It 'just happened' for seven months?" I asked, the betrayal cutting fresh lines into my chest. "You forged my signature on a mortgage modification 'by accident'? You tried to sign away my parental rights to a child you claimed was mine in your letters last month?"

She flinched. She had sent me an ultrasound picture just four weeks ago with a note that read: Can't wait for Daddy to hold you. The cruelty of it was breathtaking.

Before anyone could speak further, the front doorbell rang.

Diane immediately looked relieved. "Thank God. That must be the police. I called them when you started broadcasting those illegal videos. You're harassing us!"

She marched to the door and threw it open. "Officer, thank goodness you're here. This man is an active-duty soldier, he’s unstable, and he’s threatening his pregnant—"

She cut herself off.

Standing on the porch were not local police officers. It was two men in civilian suits wearing federal badges around their necks, accompanied by two heavily armed Military Police officers.

Behind them stood Major Elena Ruiz. She was a sharp, no-nonsense officer with iron-grey hair and eyes that could cut through steel.

"Mrs. Miller," Major Ruiz said to Diane, her voice dripping with formal authority. "I am Major Ruiz, Captain Carter’s legal counsel. These gentlemen are from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Department of the Army, and these are local law enforcement escorts."

Evan tried to push past Diane to see. "What is this? Nate, what did you do?"

Major Ruiz walked right into the house, ignoring Diane completely. She looked at Evan and then at Claire.

"Mr. Mercer, Mrs. Carter, you are currently inside a residence that is entirely funded by a military housing allowance under a sole tenancy contract signed by Captain Nathan Carter," Ruiz announced, pulling a document from her briefcase. "Furthermore, a federal freeze has been placed on all accounts associated with Captain Carter due to suspected grand larceny, identity theft, and fraud against the United States government."

She looked at Evan. "Mr. Mercer, you are formally being served with a cease-and-desist order, and a warrant is currently being processed for your arrest regarding the fraudulent use of a service member's digital credentials."

Evan’s phone dropped from his hand, clattering onto the floor. "What? No. No, this is a civil matter! It's a divorce!"

"It became a federal crime the moment you signed a Department of Defense benefits form under penalty of perjury," Major Ruiz said with a cold, professional smile. "You have thirty minutes to pack a single bag of personal belongings and vacate the premises. If you touch anything bought with Captain Carter’s funds, you will be detained immediately."

Claire looked at me, terror realizing its full scope. "Nathan... you're destroying my life."

"No, Claire," I said, looking away from her. "I'm just reclaiming mine."
