Chapter 4 - The Web of Deceit

Facebook Hook Headline: “The plot thickens! The baby shower betrayers didn’t just betray me—they betrayed each other. The paternity test results revealed a third man!”
I walked back into the kitchen, my face completely blank. I dropped the plastic folder onto the table in front of Major Ruiz.
"You need to see this," I said, my voice barely a whisper.
Ruiz looked up from her tablet, surprised by the sudden change in my demeanor. She opened the folder and began reading. As her eyes moved down the pages of the custody agreement, her jaw tightened. "This is premeditated conspiracy to commit insurance fraud. If this had gone through, they would have been looking at twenty years in a federal penitentiary."
"Keep reading," I said. "Look at the last page."
Ruiz flipped to the laboratory report. She stared at the 0% markers next to both my name and Evan's. She looked up at me, her eyes wide with genuine shock. "Nathan... if the baby isn't yours, and it isn't his... who does this child belong to?"
"I don't know," I said, a dark, bitter laugh escaping my throat. "Evan thinks he’s the triumphant new father stealing my life. He’s destroying his reputation, facing federal charges, and throwing away a twenty-year friendship for a baby that isn't even his."
"Does Claire know?" Ruiz asked, her legal mind already turning the gears.
"The test was ordered under her name and sent to her private email," I said. "She knows. She’s been playing both of us. She used Evan to get the money and support while I was away, convincing him he was the father to make him complicit in the fraud. She needed him to help her manage the house and the legal documents while I was deployed."
"This changes everything," Ruiz said, a sharp gleam appearing in her eyes. "Evan Mercer isn't just a villain in this story, Nathan. He's also a target of her fraud. If we show him this, his entire alliance with Claire will crumble in seconds. A conspiracy cannot stand when the thieves start eating each other."
I sat down, the exhaustion of the journey finally catching up to me. "Where are they now?"
"My contacts tell me they went to Diane's house downtown," Ruiz said. "Evan’s car is parked there. They’re likely trying to figure out how to counter our legal freeze."
"Let’s go give them the good news," I said, standing up.
Thirty minutes later, Major Ruiz and I pulled up to Diane’s pristine, two-story suburban home. I was still in my uniform, the dust of the Middle East still clinging to the fabric. I didn't care. I wanted this finished.
We walked up to the door and I didn't knock softly. I pounded on the wood.
The door flew open, and Diane stood there, her face contorted in rage. "You again! I’m calling the police, Nathan! You have no right to stalk my daughter!"
"Get out of the way, Diane," I said, walking right past her into the living room.
Claire was sitting on the couch, drinking tea, while Evan paced the floor, shouting into his phone. He slammed it shut when he saw me.
"Nate! You have a lot of nerve coming here!" Evan yelled, marching toward me. "My lawyer says your little stunt with the TV was an invasion of privacy! We're going to sue you for everything you have!"
"You should save your money for a criminal defense attorney, Evan," I said, remaining perfectly still. "And maybe a biology textbook."
I reached into my pocket, pulled out a photocopy of the NIPT laboratory report, and tossed it onto the coffee table in front of him.
"What is this?" Evan sneered, picking it up.
Claire looked at the paper, and in that instant, I saw the absolute, paralyzing terror return to her face. She reached out to grab it, but Evan pulled it back, his eyes scanning the text.
"It's a paternity test," I said softly. "The one Claire took five months ago. Look at the bottom line, Evan."
Evan’s eyes moved down the page. He stopped. He read it again. The color slowly drained from his face, turning him a sickly shade of grey. He looked at Claire, then back at the paper, then at Claire again.
"Claire..." Evan’s voice cracked, losing all of its arrogant bravado. "What is this? What does this mean?"
"Evan, it's a mistake! The clinic got the samples mixed up!" Claire panicked, scrambling off the couch and grabbing his arm. "I swear to you, it's a mistake! The baby is yours! I love you!"

"It's not a mistake, Evan," I said. "The clinic verified the digital signature and the patient portal logs. Claire accessed this file four months ago. She knew the whole time. She needed a father for the paperwork, and she needed someone to do her dirty work while I was gone. You weren't the guy replacing me. You were just the sucker holding the bag."
Evan looked at the woman he had betrayed his best friend for. The silence in the room was deafening.
