Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Trap

(Approx. 3,500 words)Sirens were wailing in the distance, growing louder by the second. Someone in the surrounding buildings had heard the gunfire and called the police.

Adrian scrambled to his feet, his heart hammering against his ribs. He looked down at Dr. Harrison’s lifeless body. The digital voice recorder in his pocket felt like a live wire—it contained the confession, but with the doctor dead, his mother's high-priced lawyers could easily claim the audio was coerced, manipulated, or inadmissible.

He had to get out. If the police caught him at the scene of a murder, Victoria’s narrative would be complete: Adrian Walker, driven mad by grief, killed his family doctor and kidnapped his child. He would spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security prison, and Noah would be left in the clutches of the monster who killed his mother.

Adrian sprinted out the back door of the clinic, dodging into the narrow alleys of the city center. He sprinted the two blocks to the hidden dirt bike, kicked the engine to life, and roared away just as four police cruisers skidded to a halt in front of the medical building.

By the time he made it back to the forest reserve and walked up the trail to the hunting cabin, his mind was spinning. He pushed the wooden door open, exhausted and covered in sweat.

"Emma!" he called out quietly. "Emma, we have to move."

There was no answer.

The cabin was deathly quiet. The small fire in the hearth had died down to gray ashes.

Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. He pushed past the small kitchen area into the single bedroom.

The bed was empty. Noah’s small blanket was tossed on the floor.

On the rough wooden table in the center of the room sat a brand-new, modern smartphone. It was vibrating.

Adrian approached the table as if it were a bomb. He picked up the phone and pressed the green button. He brought it to his ear.

"Where are they?" Adrian growled, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of fear and murderous intent.

"You really underestimate me, Adrian," Victoria Walker’s voice came through the speaker, crisp, clear, and perfectly calm. She sounded as if she were hosting a high-society tea party rather than coordinating a kidnapping. "Did you honestly think your father’s little hunting cabin wasn't on my radar? I let you have your little run today. I needed you to clear out Dr. Harrison for me. He was getting weak. He was going to break eventually, and you saved me the trouble of setting him up."

"You monster," Adrian breathed, tears of sheer frustration spilling over his eyes. "Where is my son? If you hurt Noah—"

"Hurt him? He is a Walker, Adrian. He is my grandson and the heir to this entire empire. I would never hurt him," Victoria said, her tone dripping with mock offense. "As for your little accomplice, Emily... well, she is currently sitting in a holding cell at the county jail. I had my friends in the department pick her up for trespassing, identity theft, and grand larceny. She will be spending a very long time behind bars."

"I have Harrison's confession on tape," Adrian threatened, trying to find a leverage point. "He admitted everything before your men killed him. He confessed to altering Celeste’s records on your orders."

Victoria let out a soft, aristocratic laugh that chilled Adrian to the core. "Adrian, dear. Who do you think the police will believe? A recording found on a fugitive who was seen fleeing the scene of the doctor's murder? Yes, the security cameras down the street caught your face quite clearly, even with that little hood. You are now the prime suspect in the murder of Robert Harrison."

The trap had snapped shut. Perfect. Flawless. Victoria had engineered the entire scenario to destroy him completely.

"But I am a mother, Adrian, and I am willing to offer you a compromise," Victoria continued, her voice turning cold and transactional. "You will come to the Walker Corporate Headquarters tonight at 9:00 PM. The board will be there. You will sign over your voting shares and full legal guardianship of Noah to me. In exchange, I will ensure the murder charges against you are 'dropped' due to a lack of evidence. You will be sent to a luxury rehabilitation facility in Switzerland for a few years to 'recover' from your mental breakdown. You will live comfortably, but you will never see Noah again, and you will never return to this country."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then you will be shot on sight by the police the moment you are spotted. And Emily will suffer a fatal 'accident' while awaiting trial in jail. The choice is yours, my son. Choose wisely."

The line went dead.

Adrian stared at the blank screen of the phone. The room felt entirely empty. He had no money, no allies, no wife, and now, his son and Emma were gone. He looked down at the locket that Emma had given him, still clutched in his hand. He popped it open, looking at the faded picture of Celeste and Emma smiling together as young girls, long before the shadow of the Walker family had darkened their lives.

"I'm not giving up," Adrian whispered to the empty room. "Celeste, I swear to you, I'm going to finish this."

He sat down at the table, pulled out the folder of documents Emma had compiled during her six months as a housekeeper, and began to read every single line, looking for the one thing his mother had overlooked.
