Chapter 5 - The Corporate Showdown

(Approx. 3,500 words)The Walker Corporate Headquarters was a ninety-story monolith of glass and steel that pierced the night sky in the heart of the financial district. At 8:55 PM, the lobby was empty, guarded by an elite team of private security guards dressed in black suits.

The glass elevators ascended silently to the penthouse boardroom.

When the doors slid open, Adrian walked out. He had cleaned himself up. He wore a fresh suit—not his charcoal one, which was ruined, but a stark, deep-black suit with a snow-white shirt. His hair was combed back, his posture commanding. He looked every bit the powerful CEO he had been trained to be.

The boardroom doors opened.

Sitting around the massive mahogany table were the twelve members of the board of directors—men and women who controlled billions of dollars. At the head of the table sat Victoria Walker, looking like an empress in a midnight-blue gown, her silver hair perfectly coiffed.

To her right stood Marcus, the legal counsel, a thick stack of legal documents resting beneath his hands.

In the corner of the room, two security guards stood watch, their hands resting near their holstered weapons.

"You're on time," Victoria said, a small, victorious smirk playing on her lips. "I’m glad to see you’ve regained your senses, Adrian."

Adrian walked to the foot of the table, opposite his mother. He didn't sit down. He rested his hands on the back of a leather chair. "Where is Noah?"

"Noah is safe at the estate, sleeping soundly under the care of a highly qualified, vetted nanny," Victoria said smoothly. "And as promised, Emily Carver is currently being held safely, awaiting the withdrawal of charges—pending your signature on these documents."

Marcus slid the stack of papers down the long table. They came to a stop right in front of Adrian.

"Sign them, Adrian," Marcus said, his eyes avoiding his friend's gaze. "Full transfer of voting rights, full resignation from the company, and the voluntary surrender of parental rights to Victoria. It’s the only way out for you."

Adrian picked up the heavy gold pen that lay beside the documents. He turned it over in his hand, looking at the Walker family logo engraved on the cap.

"You know, Mother," Adrian said, his voice remarkably calm, echoing clearly in the silent boardroom. "I spent the last five hours reading through the files Emma stole from your private safe. I was looking for the offshore accounts Celeste found. The ones linked to the illegal pharmaceutical testing."

Victoria’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Those files are proprietary, and any disclosure would violate federal non-disclosure laws. Don't waste your breath."

"Oh, I'm not going to disclose them to the public," Adrian said with a slight smile. "Because I realized something interesting when I looked at the transaction dates. The offshore accounts weren't opened by you."

The boardroom grew intensely quiet. Several board members looked up, shifting uncomfortably in their seats.

"What are you talking about?" Victoria said, her voice losing a fraction of its composure.

"The accounts were opened twenty-five years ago," Adrian said, walking slowly down the side of the table. "By my father. Charles Walker. He was the one who started the illegal testing. He was the one who built the foundation on the suffering of those patients. And when he died, you didn't continue it because you wanted to—you continued it because the board forced you to."

Adrian stopped right behind one of the senior board members—an elderly man named Arthur Pendelton, who had been his father's closest associate.

"Isn't that right, Arthur?" Adrian asked, placing a heavy hand on Arthur’s shoulder. The old man flinched, his face turning pale. "My mother didn't kill Celeste because she wanted to protect her own secret. She killed Celeste because you and the rest of this board threatened to expose her if she didn't clean up the mess. Celeste hadn't just found out about my mother. She had found out about all of you."

"This is outrageous!" one of the female board members shouted, slamming her hand on the table. "Victoria, get this madman out of here!"

"Adrian, sign the papers or I call the police right now!" Victoria hissed, standing up from her chair.

"Go ahead," Adrian said, pulling a small remote control from his pocket and pressing a button.

The massive digital projector screen at the front of the boardroom flashed to life. But it didn't show financial charts. It showed a live video feed.

It was a broadcast room of a major national news network. Sitting in front of a camera, flanked by federal agents, was Emma Carter. Next to her was an elderly woman whom Adrian had tracked down using his father's old private contacts—the former head nurse who had assisted Dr. Harrison on the night of Celeste’s death.

And on the screen, a ticker ran: LIVE: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW ON THE WALKER MEDICAL SCANDAL AND THE MURDER OF CELESTE WALKER.

"You thought I went to the cabin to hide, Mother," Adrian said, his voice ringing with absolute triumph. "But I didn't. I used that time to coordinate with the FBI. I bypassed the local police entirely. I sent them Emma’s files, Dr. Harrison’s recorded confession, and the nurse who was paid to stay silent about the blood transfusion. Emma isn't in jail. She’s been in protective custody for the last three hours."

Victoria fell back into her chair, her face completely drained of color. "No... no, this is impossible."

"The federal marshals are in the lobby right now, Mother," Adrian said, tossing the gold pen onto the mahogany table. "And they aren't just here for you. They’re here for every single person sitting at this table."

Right on cue, the heavy glass doors of the penthouse lobby shattered open, and dozens of armed federal agents flooded into the room, their weapons raised.

"Federal agents! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!"
