Chapter 20 - The Open Road

The screen door of the farmhouse banged shut as I burst into the kitchen, waving the acceptance letter in the air like a victory flag.

“Dad! Aunt Clara! Look!” I shouted, out of breath with excitement.

Dad rushed out from the living room, wiping sawdust from his hands, his face instantly lighting up as he caught sight of the official letterhead. Aunt Clara emerged from the pantry, gasping in delight as she read the words over my shoulder.

“First place! A full scholarship!” Dad cheered, scooping me up in a massive, crushing hug that lifted my feet entirely off the floor. When he set me back down, tears of pure joy were shining brightly in his eyes. “I knew it! I knew you could do anything you set your mind to, Sarah!”

That evening, we celebrated with a homemade pie and a bonfire out in the backyard, watching the sparks rise up into the warm spring twilight, melting seamlessly into a vast, star-studded sky.

Later that night, long after the fire had died down to glowing embers, I stood out on the front porch alone, looking down the long stretch of the gravel driveway leading out toward the main highway.

The road ahead was wide, winding, and completely unblocked. There were no padlocks, no secret diaries, no phantom chains, and no locked doors waiting in the dark. There was only the gentle whisper of the spring wind through the pine trees, the steady rhythm of my own deep, unhindered breath, and an endless horizon waiting to be explored.

I smiled into the night, turned the brass doorknob behind me with a smooth, effortless click, and walked freely inside.
