CHAPTER 10 — A MOTHER'S GREED, A FATHER'S SACRIFICE, AND THE TRUTH THAT SET US FREE

For one terrifying second, the world stopped.

"She's taken Jamie."

The police officer's words echoed through the ballroom like a gunshot.

Sarah screamed.

"No!"

She tried to run, but I caught her before she collapsed. William Ashford's security team was already moving, speaking urgently into their radios while detectives rushed toward the front doors.

"Where is she?" I shouted.

The officer answered breathlessly.

"A gardener saw Mrs. Foster force the boy into a black SUV through the east service gate. We have patrol units chasing the vehicle."

I didn't wait for another word.

I jumped into the nearest police cruiser.

"I'm coming."

The detective looked at me.

"It could be dangerous."

"That's my son."

He slammed the accelerator.

The Chase

The black SUV sped toward the old industrial district outside Bayside Heights.

Police sirens screamed through the night.

Helicopters circled overhead.

Inside the SUV, Jamie sat strapped into the back seat, crying softly.

"Grandma... I want my daddy."

Gertrude glanced into the rearview mirror.

"You'll thank me one day."

Jamie shook his head.

"I don't want your money."

"I want my mom."

Those innocent words made even Prudence—who had secretly climbed into the SUV with her mother—begin to cry.

"Mom... stop this."

Gertrude's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"It's too late."

"If Daniel gets that safety deposit box, everything is over."

Prudence stared at her in horror.

"So that's what this is about?"

"You kidnapped your own grandson... for money?"

Gertrude didn't answer.

She simply drove faster.

A Child's Courage

Ahead stood an old suspension bridge crossing a narrow river.

Police vehicles blocked both ends.

There was nowhere left to run.

Gertrude slammed on the brakes.

She dragged Jamie from the SUV and held him tightly.

"Stay back!" she screamed.

"I'll jump!"

The officers froze.

Sarah arrived moments later with William and me.

The second Jamie saw us, tears flooded his face.

"Daddy!"

I stepped forward slowly.

"Jamie..."

"It's okay, buddy."

"I'm here."

Gertrude held him tighter.

"No closer!"

William quietly whispered to one of his bodyguards.

The man disappeared into the darkness beneath the bridge.

I kept walking.

"You raised me."

"You fed me."

"I called you Mom."

"So tell me..."

"Were any of those years real?"

For the first time that night...

Gertrude looked tired.

Very tired.

Then she whispered something none of us expected.

"I never hated you."

Everyone froze.

"I hated your father."

She looked toward the dark river.

"He loved you more than he ever loved me."

"He gave you everything."

"The business."

"The mansion."

"The future."

"I spent thirty years standing in another woman's shadow."

Her voice cracked.

"So I decided..."

"...if I couldn't have his love..."

"...I'd take everything he left behind."

There was no triumph left in her voice.

Only bitterness.

A lifetime of it.

The Unexpected Hero

As Gertrude looked toward me...

Jamie suddenly remembered something I had taught him before leaving for Saudi Arabia.

"If you're ever scared..."

"...stomp hard on someone's foot."

Without warning...

Jamie did exactly that.

Gertrude cried out in pain.

Her grip loosened.

Jamie ran.

I sprinted forward.

He jumped into my arms.

At that exact moment, William's bodyguard emerged from beneath the bridge and tackled Gertrude to the ground.

The police surrounded her within seconds.

This time...

there was nowhere left to escape.

As officers placed handcuffs on her wrists, she looked at me one final time.

"You chose them over your real family."

I held Jamie tightly.

Then I answered calmly,

"No."

"I finally found my real family."

Six Months Later

Justice moved faster than any of us expected.

The recordings...

The forged signatures...

The stolen money...

The attempted murder...

The kidnapping...

Everything was proven in court.

Gertrude was sentenced to decades in federal prison.

Prudence accepted a plea agreement, returned millions of dollars in stolen assets, and testified against her mother. She received a reduced sentence for cooperating, but she lost every luxury she had built on lies.

The mansion was restored to my name after the fraudulent mortgages were canceled.

But Sarah surprised everyone.

"I don't want to live here."

She looked around the enormous house.

"Every wall reminds me of what happened."

So we sold it.

Instead, we bought a modest home overlooking a quiet lake, where Jamie could ride his bicycle without fear and where no room carried painful memories.

William never tried to make up for twenty-four lost years with money alone.

He came every Sunday for dinner.

Sometimes he cooked.

Sometimes he played soccer with Jamie until sunset.

Sometimes he simply sat on the porch with Sarah, grateful that life had given him a second chance.

As for me...

I never returned to Saudi Arabia.

I opened a small construction company with the compensation and recovered assets.

The first rule for every employee was simple:

No parent working overseas would ever have to wonder whether their family was safe.

Every worker could send money directly to their spouse.

No middlemen.

No excuses.

No secrets.

One evening, nearly a year after everything happened, Jamie climbed onto my lap while we watched the sunset over the lake.

"Daddy?"

"Yes, buddy?"

"Are we rich now?"

I smiled.

I looked at Sarah laughing beside her father as they planted flowers in the garden.

I wrapped my arm around my son.

Then I answered with the only truth that mattered.

"No."

"We're finally home."

And for the first time in five long years...

May you like

I truly was.
