Chapter 10 - THE LEGACY OF THE HOUNDFive years later.

The annual charity gala for the Mercer-Vance Veterinary Foundation was the most exclusive event of the year, drawing senators, pharmaceutical executives, and philanthropists from across the globe to the grand ballroom of Mercer Manor.

The ballroom glittered under crystal chandeliers, filled with the soft strains of a string quartet and the murmurs of high society.

At the center dais stood Dr. Kira Vance-Mercer, wearing an elegant emerald-silk evening gown, her hair swept up in a sophisticated knot, a diamond necklace catching the light with every word she spoke. She was presenting the keynote address on breakthrough neonatal immunology and ethical animal rehabilitation.

Off to the side of the stage, standing quietly in the shadows of the heavy velvet curtains, was Grant Mercer. He wore a sharp tuxedo, his arms crossed over his chest, watching his wife with a look of absolute, unadulterated adoration that he reserve for no one else on earth.

And sitting right at the front edge of the stage, ignoring the hundred millionaires in black tie, was a massive, majestic Neapolitan Mastiff.

Caesar wore a formal black bow tie strapped proudly around his thick neck. He scanned the crowd with stern, dignified yellow eyes, ensuring no one made any sudden movements toward the podium.

Beside him, darting playfully around his massive paws, was a sprawling, healthy, energetic two-year-old mastiff with a distinctive white patch on its chest—Miracle, the surviving runt who had beaten death on a freezing kitchen floor seven years ago.

As Kira finished her speech, the entire grand ballroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause. Flashbulbs popped like lightning storms.

Kira smiled out at the crowd, then glanced down from the stage.

Her eyes met Grant’s across the room. He gave her a slow, proud nod, lifting his champagne glass in a silent toast.

Beside him, Caesar let out a deep, happy bark that echoed effortlessly over the applause, as if leading the room in celebration.

Kira smiled back, resting her hand over her heart, knowing that sometimes, the most terrifying monsters in the world are just waiting for the right moment to show you a miracle.
