Chapter 9 - WHISPERS IN THE GARDENSpring arrived early in the valley, melting the jagged winter snow into soft ribbons of mist that wound through the sprawling iron gates of Mercer Manor.

The estate had changed. The armed patrols were still vigilant, but the oppressive, paranoid shadow that had once choked the corridors was gone. In its place was the steady, comforting hum of new life.
Out in the sunlit exercise yard, the seven Neapolitan Mastiff puppies tumbled across the fresh green grass like clumsy balls of fur. At the center of the pack was "Miracle"—now twice his original size, sleek, strong, and bursting with defiant energy. He bounded across the turf, nipping playfully at Caesar’s massive tail.
The giant mastiff didn't even blink. He simply lowered his heavy head onto his paws, letting the puppy clamber over his back as if he were a living mountain.
From the second-floor library window, Kira watched the scene with a soft smile playing on her lips. She held a steaming mug of black coffee in her hands, her lab coat hanging neatly over the back of her chair.
"Penny for your thoughts," a deep, familiar voice murmured from behind her.
Strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest. Grant rested his chin gently on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of vanilla and clean linen that always followed her.
"I was just thinking about how ridiculous life is," Kira murmured, leaning back into his embrace and resting her hands over his. "Three months ago, I was scrubbing grease off the kitchen floor at two in the morning, convinced my life was over."
"And now?" Grant asked softly, pressing a light, lingering kiss against the side of her neck.
"Now I have a state-of-the-art research lab, a pack of champion mastiffs who treat me like the alpha, and a notoriously dangerous crime lord constantly distracting me from my paperwork."
Grant chuckled, his chest vibrating against her back. "The crime lord resents that characterization. I am a legitimate businessman with aggressive negotiation tactics."
"Right. Tell that to the federal trade delegates who cower every time you walk into a boardroom."
Grant turned her slowly in his arms so she was facing him. His dark eyes were warm, stripped of all the ice and armor he wore for the outside world. He reached up, his thumb gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
"The board meeting in Geneva next week," Grant said quietly. "I want you to come with me."
Kira blinked in surprise. "Geneva? As what? Your medical advisor?"
"As my partner," Grant corrected instantly, his tone leaving zero room for argument. "The syndicate is broken, Hayes is locked away for the next twenty years, and my international operations are completely restructured. It’s time I started showing the world the woman who actually keeps this empire breathing."
Kira looked up into his face. The man who owned half the city, who commanded armies of enforcers, was looking at her as if she were the only thing in the universe that truly mattered.
She smiled, sliding her arms up around his neck. "Only if we can stop by the Alpine rescue kennels on the way back. I promised Caesar we’d look into importing a few mountain tracking lines."
May you like
Grant groaned dramatically, though a wide grin broke across his face. "If we bring home another dog, Reed is going to resign and buy a goat farm."
"Let him," Kira laughed softly. "Caesar is a much better security guard anyway."
