Chapter 8 - THE RECKONINGThree days later, the sun broke through the heavy winter clouds, casting a golden light across the snow-covered gardens of Mercer Manor.

Inside the east-wing suite, things were peaceful.
Luna lay contentedly in her oversized bed, her seven puppies—including the tiny survivor, now officially nicknamed "Miracle"—nursing happily. Caesar was stretched out across the rug nearby, his bandaged shoulder healing cleanly, his tail giving a lazy thump whenever Kira walked past.
Dr. Hayes and the remnants of the syndicate cell were already locked away in federal custody, traded quietly by Grant Mercer in exchange for complete immunity and a permanent end to the corporate espionage plaguing his breeding lines. The federal prosecutor's office had conveniently overlooked a few minor technicalities in exchange for the watertight evidence Kira and Grant had provided regarding illegal animal trafficking rings.
And Kira Vance?
She was no longer wearing the gray housekeeper's uniform.
Instead, she stood in front of the large mahogany desk in the estate's private library, wearing a crisp, tailored white lab coat over a simple black turtleneck. On the desk in front of her lay an official plaque, gleaming under the desk lamp: Dr. Kira Vance – Chief Director of Veterinary Research & Genetics, Mercer Foundation.
The heavy oak doors swung open, and Grant walked in.
He had shed his usual three-piece armor for a simple charcoal sweater, looking less like an untouchable underworld kingpin and more like a man finally at peace in his own home. He walked over to the desk, sliding a thick manila folder across the polished wood.
"Federal board review," Grant said, leaning casually against the edge of the desk. "Your credentials have been fully reinstated. No conditions, no probation. The state veterinary board formally apologized for the 'administrative oversight' seven years ago."
Kira stared at the folder. Her throat tightened, and for the first time in seven years, a warm tear slipped silently down her cheek. She didn't try to hide it.
"Thank you, Grant," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
"Don't thank me," Grant said, his dark eyes softening as he reached across the desk, gently placing his hand over hers. His fingers were warm, steady, and calloused. "Thank Caesar. He has exceptional taste in people."
Kira looked down at their joined hands, then up into his eyes. The electric tension that had sparked in the kitchen floor three nights ago was still there, but now it carried the quiet promise of a new beginning.
"So," Kira asked with a faint, playful smile playing at the corners of her lips. "Does this mean I'm officially off cleaning duty?"
Grant chuckled—a rich, deep sound that warmed the entire room.
"Well," Grant murmured, stepping just a fraction closer, his gaze dropping briefly to her lips before meeting her eyes again. "That depends. Are you still willing to make house calls when the master of the house needs his pulse checked?"
Before Kira could answer, a heavy, familiar weight bumped softly against the side of the desk, followed by a low, happy huff.
They both looked down.
Caesar was sitting right beside them, resting his massive head against Kira's foot, looking up with big, soulful brown eyes as if to say: Stop talking and seal the deal already.
May you like
Grant laughed outright, pulling Kira gently toward him into an embrace that felt less like a safe harbor and more like home.
And in that quiet mansion, surrounded by life, loyalty, and a future they had both fought to reclaim, the terror of the past finally faded into the dark.
