Chapter 3 - The Secret in Sicily

The tension inside the ruined vault was thicker than the smoke from a gunshot. Nico stood over Maribel, his tall frame casting a long shadow across her red silk dress. The men outside were securing the perimeter, but inside this small concrete box, the world had narrowed down to two people and a seven-year-old lie.
"Talk to me," Nico said, his voice dangerously calm. "Now."
Maribel closed her eyes for a brief second, inhaling the damp air of the vault to steady her racing heart. When she opened them, the executive secretary was gone. The cold, analytical corporate machine was gone. In her place was a woman who had survived hell.
"My name is Elena Rossi," she said, her voice steady despite the ghost hovering over them. "Seven years ago, my family owned a small olive grove outside Palermo. The Lucchese family wanted the land to build a transit hub for their narcotics route. My father refused. Gianni Lucchese—the man in that photo—personally burned our house down with my parents inside."
Nico’s jaw tightened, but he didn't interrupt.
"I survived because I was away at university," she continued, looking directly into Nico’s eyes. "I wanted revenge. I infiltrated the Lucchese organization as an accountant. I spent two years learning their systems, tracking their money, and eventually, I leaked the coordinates of their main processing facility to a rival faction. The Bellantes."
Nico’s eyes widened slightly as the pieces of the puzzle began to click into place. "The 2018 raid. We thought it was an anonymous tip from an informant inside the police."
"It was me," Maribel said. "The raid destroyed the Lucchese family, but Gianni survived. Everyone thought he died in the warehouse fire, including me. I changed my name, forged my credentials, and came to America. I applied for a job at Bellante Global because I knew it was the safest place in the world. The Luccheses would never look for an informant under the protection of the family that destroyed them."
Nico stared at her, his mind processing the sheer audacity of the woman standing before him. For three years, she hadn't just been managing his schedule; she had been hiding in plain sight, using his own criminal empire as a shield against her past.
"You used me," Nico said, his voice dropping an octave.
"I protected you," Maribel countered, stepping closer until her chest almost touched his jacket. "Look at the ledgers, Nico. Look at the three years of record-breaking profits, the audits I intercepted, the federal investigations I deflected before they ever reached your desk. I didn't just hide here. I earned my keep. I kept your empire alive."
Nico reached out, his hand wrapping around the back of her neck, his fingers tangling in her dark hair. He pulled her forward until their faces were inches apart. "And what happens now? Gianni has the ledger. If he gives it to Vance, my father goes to a federal penitentiary and I spend the rest of my life in a supermax."
"He won't give it to Vance," Maribel said, her breath warm against his lips. "Gianni doesn't want justice, Nico. He wants me. The ledger is just the leash he’s using to pull me back to Sicily."
Suddenly, the warehouse doors burst open. Marco ran down the concrete stairs, his weapon drawn and his face grim.
"Boss, we have a problem," Marco shouted. "The FBI just surrounded the perimeter. They have a warrant for the warehouse, and Assistant Director Vance himself is leading the tactical unit. We have thirty seconds to get out through the old drainage tunnels, or we’re locked down."
Nico looked at Maribel, his grip on her neck softening but not releasing. The sound of sirens began to wail in the street above, the red and blue lights flashing through the high grates of the vault windows, casting eerie patterns over her red silk dress.
"The dress has to go," Nico said suddenly.
May you like
"What?" Maribel blinked.
"It’s too bright. It’s a target," Nico said, pulling off his heavy wool tailored overcoat and wrapping it around her shoulders, completely burying the red silk in dark cloth. He grabbed her hand, his eyes burning with a fierce, protective fire. "We’re going to the docks. If Gianni wants a war, we’re bringing it to his doorstep."
