Chapter 6 - The Final Question

The lights inside the captain’s quarters didn't just flicker—they died completely.
A split second later, the ship’s emergency sirens began to wail, a deafening, rhythmic scream that echoed through the steel corridors. But it wasn't a fire alarm. It was the automated hull-breach alarm.
"What did you do?!" Adrian shouted, dropping his champagne glass as the floor beneath them tilted violently to the left.
"I didn't do anything," Maribel said, stepping back toward the door as the room plunged into red emergency lighting. "Nico did. He didn't attack the ship with guns, Adrian. He used the ballast pumps. He’s currently pumping forty thousand gallons of harbor water into your starboard fuel tanks. In five minutes, this ship capsizes."
Panick exploded in the corridor outside. The sound of shouting guards was suddenly cut short by the sharp, muffled thud-thud-thud of suppressed firearms.
Gianni lunged for Maribel, his scarred face twisted in a mask of pure fury. "You bitch! I’ll kill you myself!"
Before his fingers could reach her throat, the heavy steel door of the cabin was blown inward with a deafening crash. A flashbang grenade detonated in the entryway, filling the room with blinding white light and a concussive shockwave that threw Adrian and Gianni to the floor.
Through the smoke, a figure moved with terrifying speed and precision.
Nico Bellante stepped into the room, his assault rifle raised, his tactical gear slick with rain. Behind him, Marco and three other men instantly secured the exits, their weapons trained on the fallen men.
Nico didn't look at Gianni. He didn't look at Adrian. He walked straight over to Maribel, his eyes scanning her from head to toe, taking in the ripped red silk dress.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his voice thick with an intensity that bordered on feral.
"I'm fine," she said, her breath coming fast. "The ledger is on the desk."
Nico grabbed the leather-bound book, tossing it to Marco without looking. Then, he turned his attention to the floor.
Adrian Vale was weeping, holding his injured wrist, his expensive suit soaked in spilled champagne and rainwater. Gianni Lucchese was struggling to his feet, his hand reaching for a compact pistol hidden in his waistband.
Nico didn't hesitate. He stepped forward and drove the heavy combat boot of his right foot into Gianni’s ribs, sending the Sicilian crashing back against the mahogany desk with a sickening crack. Nico knelt down, pressing the hot barrel of his rifle directly against Gianni’s forehead.
"Give me one reason," Nico whispered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Give me one reason I shouldn't leave your brains on this desk right now."
"Nico, wait," Maribel said, stepping forward, her hand resting on Nico’s shoulder.
Gianni laughed through a mouthful of blood, looking up at Nico with wild, defeated eyes. "Go ahead, Bellante. Kill me. But you’re already too late. The digital copies of that ledger were automated. They go to the FBI in exactly three minutes. You’re going down with me."
The room went dead silent, save for the wailing siren and the tilting floor of the ship.
Nico didn't blink. He slowly lowered his rifle, a strange, chilling calm settling over his features. He turned his head slightly to look up at Maribel, who was standing behind him, the ripped red silk dress clinging to her curves, her face completely composed.
Then, the mafia boss asked the one question that changed everything.
"Maribel," Nico said, his voice quiet, almost conversational. "Did you finish the encryption migration I authorized last Tuesday?"
Maribel smiled—a beautiful, lethal smile that made Gianni’s blood run cold.
"Yes, Nico," she replied smoothly. "Last Tuesday, I migrated the entire Bellante Global digital infrastructure to an off-shore quantum-encrypted server based in Switzerland. I also took the liberty of routing all anonymous incoming data packets addressed to the FBI through our own proxy servers."
Gianni’s smile vanished. "What?"
"It means, Gianni," Maribel said, leaning over the desk until her face was inches from his, "that when your automated system hits 'send' in two minutes, the ledger won't go to Assistant Director Vance. It will go directly into a dead-letter file that I control. You didn't steal our future. You just handed us the names of every single one of your remaining associates in Europe."
Gianni stared at her, the realization of his total, absolute destruction sinking in. He hadn't trapped them; they had lured him out of hiding, used him to consolidate their European assets, and neutralized his only leverage before he even stepped foot in America.
Nico stood up, slinging his rifle over his shoulder. He looked down at Adrian and Gianni like they were already ghosts.
"Marco," Nico ordered. "Tie them to the cargo racks in the lower hold. Leave them enough air to breathe until the harbor police arrive to investigate the 'accidental' flooding of the ship. Let Vance find them here with forty million dollars worth of illegal, undocumented chemical cargo. Let’s see how his British investments handle a federal smuggling charge."
"Yes, Boss," Marco said, dragging the screaming, protesting men out of the cabin.
The room was suddenly empty, the floor still slightly tilted, the rain outside beginning to slacken as the first gray light of dawn broke over the Atlantic.
Nico turned to Maribel. The adrenaline of the battle was fading, leaving only the raw, unresolved tension that had been building between them for three long years. He reached out, his hand wrapping around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. The wet, ruined red silk fabric felt cold, but her body was burning hot.
"Elena Rossi," Nico murmured, his gray eyes searching hers. "An undercover accountant who destroyed a syndicate. An executive secretary who runs my world. Who exactly am I looking at right now?"
Maribel raised her hands, looping them around his neck, her fingers tangling in his short, damp hair.

"You’re looking at the woman who keeps you alive, Nico," she whispered. "And the woman who’s going to make you buy her a new dress."
Nico didn't answer with words. He leaned down and kissed her—a hard, possessive, and long-overdue kiss that tasted of rain, adrenaline, and absolute victory. Outside, the city of Boston was waking up, entirely unaware that its empire had just changed hands, locked forever in the grip of a mafia boss and the curvy secretary who held the keys to his world.
