Chapter 5 - The Unravelling

The back door’s glass panel shattered inward, and three police officers burst through, guns drawn and flashlights cutting through the dusty kitchen air. Behind them stepped a woman in a sharp navy suit with an FBI badge pinned to her lapel.

Charles froze. The tire iron slipped from his bloody fingers, clattering loudly against the tile floor.

"Down on the ground! Now!" the lead officer screamed.

Charles slowly lowered himself to his knees, his arrogant demeanor instantly evaporating into the pathetic posture of a caught criminal. Ryan crawled out of the basement doorway, covered in white paint and sobbing, raising his hands in surrender.

I sank against the kitchen counter, clutching the Lenovo laptop to my chest, my breath coming in ragged gasps.

The FBI agent walked over to me, gently placing a hand on my shoulder. "Nicole? My name is Agent Vance. Special Agent Marcus Vance, Civil Rights and Human Trafficking Division. And no," she added with a small, reassuring smile, "I am not related to Arthur Vance, the family attorney. Your father called us."

"My... my father?" I whispered.

"He didn't trust the family attorney either," Agent Vance said. "The moment you told him you were going back to the Reynolds house, he called the FBI tip line we've had active on Charles Reynolds for the last eighteen months. We’ve been building a case against the Charles Reynolds Youth Foundation, but we lacked the hard drive encryption keys. I believe you have them?"

I looked down at the dusty laptop in my arms. "Thomas’s laptop. Everything is in here. The names of the kids, the bank accounts, the payoffs..."

"You did a brave thing, Nicole," Agent Vance said, signaling the officers to handcuff Charles and Ryan.

As they dragged Charles past me, he glared at me with a hatred so pure it made my skin crawl. "You ruined us," he spat, blood dripping from his broken nose onto the floor. "You ruined my family."

"No, Charles," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "You ruined your family the moment you decided a daughter-in-law was nothing more than a servant to be beaten. I just cleaned up the trash."

Brenda and Megan arrived twenty minutes later, escorted by another police cruiser. They had been stopped trying to flee the state with the cash from the mesquite table. When Brenda saw Charles and Ryan in handcuffs in the back of the police cars, she lost all control, screaming curses at me, blaming me for "destroying her perfect family."

Megan just stared at me, tears streaming down her face, her expensive phone nowhere to be seen. She looked like a child who had suddenly realized the fairy tale she lived in was built on a foundation of bones.

But the nightmare wasn't over yet.

As Agent Vance began cataloging the evidence in the living room, she called me over to the mesquite table.

"Nicole," she said, her voice unusually grave. "We found the lockbox beneath the table, just like you said. But there's something else. Look at the legs of this table."

I walked over. The heavy mesquite table, which I had driven my kitchen knife into three days ago, was bolted to the floorboards. But Agent Vance’s team had pried up one of the floorboards directly beneath the table's central pedestal.

"What is that?" I asked, looking down into the dark cavity beneath the floor.

"It’s a digital ledger," Agent Vance said, pulling out a small, heavy-duty black hard drive connected to a hidden router. "And it's been transmitting data to an off-shore server every hour. Someone else has been watching this house, Nicole. Someone much bigger than Charles Reynolds."

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled it out. It was a text message from an unknown, encrypted number.

“Thank you for delivering the drive, Nicole. The Reynolds family served their purpose. Now, it’s your turn.”
