Chapter 6 - The Architect of Shadows

My blood ran cold. I stared at the text message on my screen, the words burning into my retina.

"Agent Vance," I whispered, showing her the phone. "Look at this."

Vance grabbed the phone, her face instantly hardening. She immediately signaled to her tech specialist. "Trace this number! Now! Use the cell tower triangulation from the Phoenix metro area!"

"It's an encrypted satellite ping, Agent," the specialist replied, typing furiously on his laptop. "It's routing through servers in Switzerland, then Panama, then... wait. The origin signal is local. It's less than three miles from here."

"Nicole," Agent Vance said, turning to me with an intense, focused gaze. "Think. Who else knew about this house? Who helped Charles buy it? Who selected the furniture?"

I racked my brain, my mind racing through the blur of the wedding preparations. The house had been a "gift" to us from Ryan's family. But Ryan hadn't bought it.

“My uncle paid the down payment,” Ryan’s voice echoed in my memory from a conversation we had months ago. “He’s a silent partner in my dad’s foundation. He loves keeping things in the family.”

"Uncle Victor," I gasped. "Charles’s older brother, Victor Reynolds. He’s a state senator!"

Agent Vance’s eyes widened. "Senator Victor Reynolds? The chairman of the State Judiciary Committee?"

"Yes! He was at the wedding. He gave us the mesquite table as a wedding present. He said it was a 'family heirloom' that had to stay in the center of the house."

"Oh my god," Vance breathed. "Charles wasn't the mastermind. He was just the local coordinator. Senator Reynolds has been blocking our investigations into the foundation for years from the state senate. He used the house, the camera, and the table to monitor his brother’s operations and ensure Charles didn't skim off the top."

"And now he knows the FBI is here," I said, realizing the terrifying truth. "The text... he thinks I have the digital ledger. He thinks I’m the one who took it."

"We need to get you to a safe house immediately," Vance said, grabbing my arm. "If Senator Reynolds realizes his entire empire is compromised, he will eliminate anyone who can tie him to this drive."

But before we could move toward the front door, the power to the entire house suddenly cut out.

The air conditioning hummed to a halt. The bright Arizona sunlight filtering through the blinds was the only source of light left. Outside, the police sirens suddenly went silent.

"Vance, we've got a problem," an officer yelled from the front porch. "Local police frequencies are being jammed. We’ve lost contact with dispatch."

Suddenly, a black SUV with dark tinted windows screeched to a halt in the driveway, blocking the police cruisers. Three men in tactical gear, carrying automatic weapons, stepped out of the vehicle.

They didn't look like police. They looked like professional mercenaries.

"Get down!" Agent Vance screamed, pulling me behind the heavy mesquite table just as the front windows shattered in a hail of gunfire.
