Chapter 4 - The Truth UnveiledThe hospital room was quiet except for the steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor and the soft breathing of little Lily asleep in the corner chair.

Rebecca stared up at the ceiling, the harsh hospital light reflecting in her green eyes as the tears continued to track silently down her temples. James sat in the chair beside her bed, holding her hand as if letting go for even a second would cause her to turn to dust.

“It was the day after our third anniversary,” Rebecca whispered, her voice trembling. “You were away in London for the international summit. Your father came to my studio apartment in Brooklyn. He didn't shout. He didn't make a scene. He just sat at my kitchen table, laid out a thick manila folder, and looked at me like I was a piece of trash stuck to the bottom of his shoe.”

James felt a muscle twitch in his jaw. “What did he tell you?”

“He showed me forged bank records,” Rebecca swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around James's hand. “He told me that you were already engaged to the daughter of a British shipping tycoon—an arrangement made months prior to secure the European market. He told me that my presence in your life was a juvenile phase that was actively destroying your reputation with the board.”

“It was a complete lie,” James growled, his voice vibrating with suppressed rage. “There was never any engagement. I never looked at another woman.”

“I know that now,” Rebecca wept softly. “At the time... I was young, terrified, and completely alone in the world. But then he laid down the final card. He pulled out a photograph of my younger brother, Leo, who was studying architecture in Chicago on a partial scholarship.”

James’s eyes narrowed. “My father threatened Leo?”

“He said my brother’s scholarship would be revoked within the hour,” Rebecca whispered, her voice breaking. “He said Leo would be blacklisted from every architectural firm in North America, buried under trumped-up academic fraud charges, and tossed out onto the street with fifty thousand dollars in student debt that your family would call in immediately. Unless... I walked away from you completely.”

“Goddamn him,” James hissed, slamming his free fist against the metal bedrail, making the tray rattle.

“He made me sign a strict NDA,” Rebecca continued, closing her eyes tightly. “He told me if I ever told you the truth—if I ever hinted that we were forced apart—he would ruin Leo’s life and hunt me down to the ends of the earth. He arranged a car outside my building within ten minutes. They drove me to New Jersey, dumped me with a prepaid burner phone, and told me to disappear. I changed my name, I moved three times in two years, and I raised Lily on my own while working twenty hours a day restoring damaged paintings just to keep food on the table.”

James leaned forward, brushing a stray lock of auburn hair away from her damp forehead. His thumb gently traced her cheekbone.

“You carried that alone for five years,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “Why didn't you reach out to me when Lily was born? Why didn't you trust that I would fight for you?”

“Because your father showed me what people like the Carters can do,” Rebecca looked directly into his eyes, her gaze fierce and unyielding despite her physical weakness. “They own hospitals, judges, politicians, and corporations. I was a nobody from an orphanage. I couldn't risk my daughter’s life to prove a point against a monster.”

James leaned down and pressed his lips softly against her forehead. When he pulled back, his eyes were cold, hard, and blazing with a terrifying intensity.

“My father thinks he owns the world because he has money,” James said quietly. “He forgot one very important detail.”

“What’s that?” Rebecca whispered.

“I learned everything I know about business from him,” James replied, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. “And tomorrow morning, the student is going to bankrupt the master.”

Before Rebecca could reply, the door to the VIP suite swung open.

Standing in the doorway, flanked by two burly private security guards in black suits, was Arthur Carter.
