Chapter 2 - THE ARREST AND THE REVELATIONWithin ten minutes, the master bedroom was filled with flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the ceiling. Two Military Police officers and three local sheriff’s deputies stood guard.

A paramedic gently examined my wrist and ribs. “Two fractured ribs, severe contusions on the chest and thighs, and a sprained wrist,” the paramedic reported quietly to the lead deputy. “She needs to be transported to the hospital immediately to check fetal vitals.”

“No!” Beatrice’s voice shrieked from the hallway. She was being held back by a female deputy. “She did that to herself! She self-harms! Check her medical records! Dr. Evans signed off on her psychological hold!”

My father walked out to the landing, looking down at Beatrice like she was an insect beneath his boot.

“Dr. Evans,” my father said smoothly, holding up his phone, “was arrested twenty minutes ago at his clinic. It turns out accepting $50,000 in bribe money to falsify psychiatric reports for an active-duty officer is a federal crime, Beatrice.”

Beatrice froze. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Julian was already in handcuffs, his arms pinned behind his back by two burly MPs. The crisp uniform he was so proud of was rumpled, his hair messy, his dignity destroyed.

“Colonel Sterling, please,” Julian pleaded, dropping the tough act entirely. He was desperate now. “Think about Vivienne! Think about the baby! A scandal like this will ruin our family name! We can fix this internally. Let’s talk officer to officer!”

My father walked slowly down the stairs, stopping just one step above Julian so he towered over him.

“You are not an officer, Vance,” my father said softly, his voice dangerously low. “You are a predator who hid behind a uniform. And as of 0800 hours this morning, your security clearance has been revoked, your pay grade frozen, and General Thomas has personally signed your court-martial authorization.”

Julian’s eyes widened in sheer terror. “General Thomas? How... how do you know General Thomas?”

“I trained him,” my father replied coldly. “Take him away.”

As the MPs marched Julian toward the door, I managed to walk out to the banister, supported by a kind female officer. I looked down at Julian.

“Julian,” I called out.

He stopped, turning his head, a desperate flicker of hope in his eyes that I might soften, that I might save him.

“I found the safe in the basement,” I said, my voice strong and unwavering. “I know about the supply chain files from the base logistics depot. The FBI is waiting at your office right now.”

Julian’s face drained of what little color was left. He didn't just abuse his wife; he had been stealing and selling military equipment on the black market—a crime that didn't just carry years in prison, but potential treason charges.

“You bitch!” Beatrice screamed, lunging toward me before being slammed against the wall by a deputy and cuffed. “You ruined my son!”

“No, Beatrice,” I said, watching them both get dragged out into the rain. “You ruined him. He just made the mistake of targeting me.”
